Just doing some basic video editing of home movies, etc.

adding music etc. Nothing real flashy....

What software package do you recommend.
I then put them on VCD...

I've used MS Movie Maker 2.0 ... its nice but a pain because it is dificult to save in anything other than WMV format

and i have used Ulead Video Studio, but it is DOG slow and very cumbersome layout...

    Thanks
    Curtis

    ms movie maker sucks!!

adobe premier is the best, and you can do almost anything with it.

apple imovie is good, if you have a mac

    i definately recommend premier

vegas video is good, and not nearly as expensive as premier. There are also a few free ones. Try going to www.afterdawn.com
    It's a good music/video editing freeware/shareware site.

I bought the Pinnacle Studio AV. It came with a video capture card to capture from my VCR and only $120. It does all the basic editing and is easy to use. It also can render the video into many different formats, including mpeg, mpeg2, many different avi codecs, streaming real movies, etc...

It allows voiceovers, music from cds, sound bites, and sound effects. It also allows you to edit the sound in an easy format.

I don't know how much products like Adobe Premiere costs. But for $130 you can get a video capture card and an easy to use, yet still powerful video editing program.

I tried Pinnacle and Dazzle, they are decent all in one capture hardware and software. They can be gotten for as little as 69 bucks or so, depending how much you want to spend. I mention these along the same line as Josh because for that price, you get the capture software, editing software and copy to DVD sotware, almost worth the money right there. Plus the USB connector I got lets you hook in digital cameras, vcrs and more...

I already have an ATi All in Wonder Card so hardware is not an issue, just curious about software

Premier looks nice but $400 is out as this is just for home use and fun...

Get Studio by itself for only $70! (www.compusa.com $100 - $30 mfr. mail in rebate) I use studio for editing movies my freinds and I make (pretty good movies for only use things lying around the house). The whole interface is easy to navigate and the program is also powerful for just editing home movies. It also supports any codec that you want to turn your movie into. I personally put all movies in the Divx codec.

I tried using Windows Moviemaker and hated it. Pinnacle studio will do everything that you will need it to do and still only cost you $70.

ps- that rebate is only good till march 15th according to compusa.com

I know you had a card, my point was that for 70 bucks, these come with a suite of software, DVD burning, editing, capturing, you name it. If you dont want to spend 499 dollars, then you buy a Dazzle or Pinnacle and throw the USB cable out.

Anyway, found your answer Nero has a killer program, its burning to DVD a VHS tape I just captured as I am typing this. Its easier then the software that came with my Dazzle, which I was having trouble figuring out how to move the AVI it recorded to DVD format and burn, yet it was instant with this program.. I also registered Nero about 3 years ago, its been great, still get free updates. Good company.

    We added it here:

    Otherwise:

Oh, it fits your price range.... FREE, if you own Nero, otherwise you might need to buy encoders or something, not real clear on that, but hey, Nero is worth every penny.
