Video Editor question

I've been using and recommending majorgeeks.com for some time now, but this is the first time I've posted. I usually have no problem finding what I want but all the past posts on this subject (some of which point to VDub) just lead to links with downloads for everything but the software I want, hence the following.

This weekend, I was filmed (.avi) rehearsing (clip1) and performing (clip2) a song for a wedding. I'd like to edit, merge and then put it on the net.

I'm looking for a video editor that works with avi files that will help me cut out the first half of clip1, cut out the second half of clip2, and then allow me to merge clip2's remainder onto the front half of clip1 and save the resulting merged file as a new avi file.

Which software/shareware/freeware can help me do that?

Virtual Dub will do this. I have used it to join two edited video clips MANY times and rarely have any issues. If your source files have variable bit rates, then you need a different version of Virtual Dub. You need VDubMP3Freeze http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Virtualdub_MP3_Freeze I have used this version MANY times to join AVI files with different bit rates and it worked perfectly. The 'secret' to VDub is to save you files when you're done editing them, and save them with a different file name than the source file(s). Always keep your source file unedited and 'pristine' so if you make a drastic error, you can start over. Anyway- you need to edit file #1, save it; edit file #2, save it. Re-open the edited file #1 and using the 'append' feature, add the edited file #2 to it, then save. Be sure you use direct stream copy or else VDub will try to re-encode the whole thing and you'll end up with a 7gb video file after waiting for 2 hours....
