Video GIMP...?

Right, I had a trial of Adobe Premier Elements running a while back and though I would pay for it, I don't use it enough at the moment to justify paying for it.
I'm not going for a ripoff copy, so right now I'm looking for alternatives.

I use GIMP for editing and touching up my photography (though most of my stuff is on film) and find that it can do just about everything I need.

I'd really like something similar for video. (i.e. open source, I just like the open source ethos) but otherwise freeware would also be good.

I'm not a fan of Windows Movie Maker and would like something capable of reasonably high end work (along the lines of Premier/Elements that is)

I work in DV so something that can handle capture as well as editing would be useful (I loved the way Premier elements worked on this front) and am also about to start making a short animation. I have a package called MonkeyJam which I've heard is good, but still haven't started with it - if the same package could handle animation too that would be very handy (of course I'm starting to ask a lot now though)

So - any input on free/open source video editing software along the line of Adobe Premier (or Premier Elements) would be appreciated.

    Cheers folks. :)

(Side note, and this really is a side question so please don't go moving the thread because of it - if the program you reccomend is Linux native and works in XP or has a separate Linux and XP version, please do let me know, one that can work in both would be ideal - cheers)

Blender looks more like a 3d modeling and animation suite, and I simply don't have the time to be playing with 3d right now. Unless I'm mistaken that wouldn't be much use for digital video work, would it?

I draw frames in spare time when not working (and I work at a computer so the use of paper is a joy) scan (or photograph) them and feed them into something to animate them. That's just on the animation front though.

Jahshaka looks like a really nice bit of kit... No shortage of OS support either. I could even keep using it if I eventually cough up the money for a mac. I'm not entirely sure how likely that is, but it is nice to have the option without software switching.

I'll probably download Jahshaka for now and see how it works, it looks likve v3 .0might be due out soon ("early 2007") too, which should bring some more goodies by the looks of it.

Thanks for the links. Have you used much of either of them?
I'd be interested to know whether there was part of the process (from capture, through editing, to making menus, to preparing to burn to DVD and maybe the burn itself) that Jahshaka can't handle.

I'll jump on the forums there and see what people are saying but it's nice to get input elsewhere where it is possible.

Anyone else with suggestions, please do keep the coming too :)

Ok, I've downloaded and installed Jahshaka and I really don't know what to make of it.
It's not like any video editing software I've used before, and there's more...

Basically the website makes what appear to be some very grand, but also rather vague claims that just don't seem to show up in the software.
Having read the forum for a short while it seems that the makers of Jahshaka are working the software backwards. It looks quite pretty (though I'm not a huge fan of programs that run in non standard windows with odd layouts) but there's little actual functionality to speak of. Either that or it's just very counter-intuitive and works well once you know how to use it (though with no real knowledge-base to learn from I'd be more inclined to splash on adobe software than to wait for v3 and then have to stumble my way through it)

It seems like it is very much a work in progress but for some strange reason being touted as if it is a finished piece of software. Potential, maybe, but as it stands I think I'm going to uninstall it and try it again in about 6 months or more once they've got it to a standard most people would call v1.0.

Thanks for the suggestion - but not really what I'm looking for.

    Any more suggestions people?
