I am using Windows 7 pro with Firefox, I have the standard windows media players that come with 7 and have added VLC and AVS media players. When I try to play a gif file it uses Windows explorer to view it. I have gone to the control panel and tried all the other media programs and none work on gif. Anyone have any suggestions besides Windows Explorer?

Your second link takes me to VLC player download. I already have the latest version of VLC ( unless they upgraded inthe last 4 months) and thought it always worked before my computer crashed but after it was restored for some reason it won't work now.

    quicktime player also supports gif

and if vlc is not working like it should, try reinstalling it; that should fix most problems.

So what your saying is programs like Photo Gallery should view gif files? I have that and it shows the picture but won't put it in motion. If I am on the net all gifs work it is just when I save it is when I have problems. I never had this before.

See my image aside of my name? It is a gif as I flip my shades. Some sites show it not moving while others show it moving. I have no idea why.
Try opening the gif in the portable version of IrfanView, no install required. Just run the exe and then click File Open. That will show you if the gif is animated or not.

I have never used Photo Gallery so I won't comment on it.

your avatar works fine. I have no problem with gifs on line. It is after I have saved them as a gif file and go to replay it. The only program that plays them is Windows Explorer. Before my computer crashed and I had to rebuild it I had Quicktime Player, RealPlayer as well as VLC media on it and I had no problem viewing them from file. After I formated and reloaded my programs I chose to drop Quicktime and RealPlayer. The only image programs (Photo Gallery and Paint) I had before I reinstalled. So should I reinstall the RealPlayer & Quicktime? I thought it was overkill is why I left them out.

Thanks for reinforcing that plodr. What I was referring to was the 'it' above, which I thought could have meant vlc player was no longer working. Not that it was working and not playing his animated gif files.
