Video production programs keep crashing at startup

This is happening with Vegas and Elements on my Vista machine. Movie Maker is, for some odd reason, unaffected. Not sure what's going on, and I've tried some information from the ONLY other board that had someone post with a similar problem, but nothing was solved (involved me having to take ownership of the System32 files, which was a chore on its own for the solution doing nothing to help it).

The issue is that it won't start up without crashing and giving me the "Sony Vegas has stopped working" (or Elements, in that case). On the Vegas thing (can't remember the Elements line that it hits before crashing), it crashes on the "Initializing DirectX Plugins" line on the startup (signs of a DirectX issue that could cause other programs to not function correctly, I figure). This also happened after I reinstalled it (I reinstalled it and it first started up fine, but crashed when I tried to feed it certain projects I had or feed projects certain files. Then I went to update it to the current version, and that's when I hit the exact same problem to get me to try reinstalling in the first place).

The site also linked to the Microsoft DirectX Dev Kit, which I have no CLUE how to use or what to do with it to even BEGIN troubleshooting this.

Here are the two links in question, so you can see what they were (and please forgive me if these aren't on the up and up. This was taken from the ONLY site I got on Google that had anything at all about this (and the only guy that had the same problem). Like, the only site that came up when I searched again and again, I'm worried that this might be a bigger issue than it is currently):

It could be a memory issue. How much Ram and Cpu do you have? What kind of video or file is choking it?

I have 1.25 GB memory, with a 2.25GHz 64-bit processor (not sure if it has anything to do with it, but my version of Vista is 32-bit). Have a 256MB video card.

Most of the choking on the issue of the feeding seemed to come from bugs in the software that Sony fixed with updates. MY main goal is even getting them to start up. I start it directly, usually, and then open my file with the open command.

It's on the loading screens (regardless of how I start it up) that it stalls and chokes, so not sure if it could be because of my computer specs or just some missing files.

There was also something I added called "WAX Plugin" that I think used DirectX, so that may be an issue. It was a transition program that you could use by itself or, as mentioned, a plugin in Vegas. Could that be a possible issue?

I'm just renewing this and saying that it's still going on with both programs. Please read my previous post for the latest info.

Sorry bout all these bumps, but I think I might have some info that could help from my error log for Vegas:

All the crashes keep pointing to the vp6vfw.dll file (it has no idea WHAT is causing Adobe to crash, either). Any ideas?

I believe Vista has some initial compatibility issues with Premiere. I recommend trying this question at www.DVXUser.com . You'll find some sharp folks there that deal with NLEs far more than I do.
