video sofeware compressor help

I am looking for software that will :

CONVERT video recorded with windows media player to a format that I can then COMPRESS and then burn to a standard 4.7mb dvd--been looking a while with no luck. My assumption is that the media player video files can't be compressed ( in thier current format ) and then burned to dvd. If there is an easier way to do this, I would love to know.

WMV files are compressed. In fact they are compressed a heck of a lot more then mpegs are. So really what you'd be doing is reducing the compression when converting to mpeg. So just be aware if you've got 4GB of WMV files you'll never fit that on a 4.7GB DVD in mpeg format, unless you greatly reduce the quality.

As for programs that convert, well there are tons. I just did a search on google and come up with a handful of them on the first page. I'd also imagine most major video editing software could help you out. However, for example here is one http://www.boilsoft.com/asfconverter/news.html
