Hi, I have a CD that was burned from a VHS tape. I would like to capture some frames from it to have printed. Does anyone know of a program (free would be great!) that would allow me to do it. I tried Video2photo, but found it too hard to use and could not find any help files. Thanks.

    Hi Carol,

What file types are now on the CD? (mpeg, avi, mov, etc.)

Are you sure it's currently a CD (and not a DVD movie)?

    Let me know...

I dont't know how to tell the difference. When I check the properties tab for the disk it reads, Type: CD Drive
    File System: CDFS.
Does this tell you anything? Thanks

    Hi Again ;-)

To see what's on that CD, put it in your CD drive, then RIGHT (button) click on Start, then Explorer, then doublle-click on your CD drive (probably "D").

Then everything on the CD will appear listed to the right. Let me know what it says.

You will probably see either 2 folders (if it's a DVD), or other stuff if it's a regulatr data CD (with other types of movies).

Hi, thanks for the instructions. The 2 items listed are a folder icon with HIGHMAT written underneath and Windows Media icon with the name of the item, Hunting Trip2.wmv underneath. Thanks again.

    Hi,

OK, it looks like you have a .wmv (windows media format) movie. Just so happens I also need to capture photo's from those types of movies, so I'll take a peek to find a software to help us, (and will watch this topic closely in case someone else suggests some software sooner ;-)

MS MovieMaker (included in XP SP 2 or downloadable for free) under tools has the option to take a picture from preview. Import your video file to do so

Just tried the MS Movie Maker option and it worked great (much better image quality)

It's under Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment

    BIG Thanks to "khpostma"! ;-)

Hi, I tried the Print Screen key and it doesn't do anything. I changed the setting in the options but it still doesn't do or say anything when I press the key.

You must hit Alt and Printscreen at the same time. Then you can either paste the image into something like MS Word or a graphics program to print it.

Or, to use the Windows Movie Maker option, Read those directions very carefully and follow every step (option above may be easier for you).

If this seems tricky, you may want to reach out for any local friends who can help you. The solutions provided do work, as long as you follow them exactly (as I have tested ;-)
