I don't know if anybody's going to know this off the top of their head, but I figured it couldn't hurt to try. I bought Doom 3 a couple days ago, and I've been running it on medium resolution (there are 4 options: low, medium, high, ultra), and my fps usually fluctuates between 20 and 30 when i have all the lighting and textures turned on. My graphics card is a nVidia GeForce 5200 series. I can check the details on it later but I'm not at my house right now. My question for you guys (and girls? are there girls here?) is this: what videocards on the market today can power a game like doom 3 (or half life 2 when it comes out) at its highest picture quality. When I run doom 3 on ultra I cant play it, the fps are in single digits and it jumps like crazy, and its only a little better when on high. Would I have to spend upwards of $400 to get a card that could run this game at a solid 40 or 50 fps when on the highest resolution?

My computer should be fast enough to handle it (2.4 GHz, 512 RAM), I think its just a matter of the videocard.

Thanks in advance for any help.

X800 from ATI is supposed to be awesome, the competing Nvidia product turned me off due to the dual slots it uses and double power supply. Im running Doom 3 at 1280X1024 with everything on with no glitches with my 9800XT

Or just the 9800pro also should be just fine enough ;). Since well I only run games at 1024x768 but yea thats' just my nickel in the bucket as well I kinda always say.

Doom 3 is OpenGL-based, so nVidia's 6800 GT or Ultra is the best right now. Far Cry runs under D3D, so ATI's X800 is better. Half-life 2 has conflicting reports. The beta testers supposedly all preferred ATI, but the beta benchmarks seem to point to nVidia.

See this article on AT for a nice roundup of Doom 3 performance.
