    Hi Guys,

I am looking at upgrading my videocard, currently have a wee little Radeon 9200SE and want to replace it with something with a LOT more grunt, I just purchased and Installed Doom 3 and I get about 15 or less FPS using the 2nd lowest settings! shocking...

Anyway, whats the best card to get to last me a year or 2 before I should NEED to upgrade? Price isnt really a concern, I guess if I want to do it right, I would like to the first time!

    ATI Radeon X800 PRO
that should do if for ya for a while. unless price does become a concern, then.....
    ATI 9800 PRO
If somebody actually does have either of these cards and it doesn't work good with doom 3 then please tell us, thnx.

yeah, you may also consider the 6800gt if you really want fps in doom 3. People say that the x800 is faster than the 6800, but that's only half the time. the other half of the time, the 6800 is faster, so you may want to consider both.

If you are willing to spend lots of money get either the radeon x800 xt platnium, or the 6800 ultra. But if you don't want to spend all your money get the 6800 GT or the x800 pro. It is a toss up between which card to buy because both cards beat each other in different things. Just find a good deal on one of them and buy it. I know you will be happy.

nVidia will perform better in OpenGL games, like Doom3 and Halflife2 (and CS: Source). ATi performs better (only slightly now..)in DirectX games.

as has been said, if money is no issue, decide between the 6800 Ultra or the X800 XT PE. My vote goes to nVidia, though they suck up power and require a nice power supply.

@Steak and Eggs, i recently put Doom3 on my friend's system (built by me) with a p4 2.8C and a 9800pro 128MB and it runs... just not beautifully. if you like high texture detail or AntiAliasing... forget about it.

I am playing Doom3 with the highst settings on my setup. I definitly dont have AntiAliasing on however. I left the advanced settings as they where. I play with no lag. I havnt checked the FPS yet but the game looks great to me.

    [edit] im playing at 1024 x 768

Im thinking about trying out the new drivers from ATI and seeing how that works out.

yeah, dont get me wrong, its certainly playable on a 9800pro... just not to the standards i'd LIKE to see.

Well, here in AUS, we've only got the nvidia 59xx series available! and the X800 Pro.. or models under that, no Platnium Edition, or 6XXX series of nVidia cards...

I tend to lean towards nVidia, but which run hotter? I do suttely prefer the coolest cards in the end, price isnt really a concern, the way I see it, if I am going to do it, do it right, my target price is around $900 MAX I guess, but im hoping to seek a deal somewhere to get it kinda the cheapest avail...

$900 AUS? please say yes, you can get a card for far less than that in US$ haha

nVidia run hotter, as they suck up more power.

being an nVidia fan, i'd say wait for the 6800GT or Ultra if you can...

but if you have to buy a card now, there is no doubt that the X800 Pro will outperform an FX59xx card... so theres your pick.

    Yes, thats in Australian dollars..

Well, I wont be purchasing the card until September 16th or 17th, but I am studying and doing my seeking out now to work out exactly how much I need to save...

I plan on getting the videocard, then getting a metal ATX case instead of these crapola aliminim ones, then a new 80GB hard drive, then a decent speaker/sub setup all by the end of the year, but at the moment my bottleneck seems to be the video system....

I will keep an eye out for the X800 Platnium and the 6800 Ultra, my past history tells me to stick to nVidia, and regarding the doom 3 performance, in my opinion that isnt the only game I want it for, I want to play theif 3, and games coming out next year with better than 40FPS when they hit the shelfts at high detail settings.

Anyone know of any NEW graphic demo's that have come out? just to change the subject, I havent been too narrowly following the Demo Scene, I went to the www.scene.org but everything in their viewing tips section is a little dated, ahhh, anyone remember the VIP2 demo?

    Sweet
