Videos Freezing

Hi
When I try to play videos (.wmv) files on Windows Media Player 11 it freezes the PC and the screen flicks black and back to the screen and you cant do anything apart from holding in the power button to shut down the PC. Well, now this is happening when I am trying to use webcam to my friends. It allows me to view their webcam and I can see them but when I try to show them me it doesnt work. It used to just be WMP but now I know the problem just doesnt lye there, its video (files) in general.

Is there drivers or anything I could download to help this.
Its been happening since I re-installed windows months ago but never got round to sorting the problem out.
