I bought Half-Life many years ago when it first came out. I installed it on my computer and successfully played Counter-Strike online.

When Steam came out, I stopped playing as my connection speed is not fast enough. Now, my friend needs a CD-key for Steam. I am happy to give him mine since I don't need it anymore but I lost the CD along with the case that it was in.

I still have my installed Half-Life on my computer. I am wondering if it is possible to view my Half-Life CD-key through the registry or maybe through the console. Any ideas on how I can do this?

Sorry to say, but I think you are out of luck. Actually the only thing you need to install Half-Life nowadays is the cd-key. With the cd-key you can register the game on steam and the game will download to your hard drive automatically. You can't install it the other way around. Looks like you have to buy a new version.

Im not sure what company makes halflife but you could check their site to see if you could get a replacement. I know for warcraft, Blizzard will charge 5$ i think to replace a lost cd or cd-key which beats buying the whole game.

if you haven't reformatted or used a registry cleaner you CD key IS retrievable from your registry... i unfortunately don't know where it's listed... you would be better off googling "retrieve half life cd key registry" or something along those lines.... or post on the steampowered.net website or counter-strike.net forums and ask

    Error Explanation:
If you get the message: "CD-Key in use by [another player]", then someone else may have used your CD-Key to install the game. The [name] listed in this error message is not a Battle.net account name - it is the name entered when the game was installed. If this [name] is not the one you entered, please reinstall the game to ensure the correct key is entered. If the CD-Key is still in use, you may need a replacement key. Follow the steps below to request a replacement CD-Key.

    Mailing Information:
We suggest you use some form of tracking to make sure your mail gets to Blizzard Entertainment. If we do not receive your package we can not send the replacement.
For all situations a note is required that explains what happened, what is needed, your full name, your phone number, and a return address.
Note: There will be no charge to replace your CD-Key as long as you send in the original CD-Case with the original CD-Key sticker attached to it. Once we receive your package, we will disable the existing CD-Key and assign you a new one and return it to you by mail. You will need to mail in the CD case for the replacement CD-Key to the P.O. box listed below.
If the CD case is missing then there will be a fee of $10 for your key replacement. In this instance, the existing key will not be disabled. You can send the manual or game CD with a $10 US dollar money order for each CD-Key replacement, no personal check or cash will be accepted. If it has been less than 90 days since you have purchased the game and you include a copy of the sales receipt showing the purchase date within 90 days, the $10 fee will be waived.
Please allow 2-4 weeks for processing and return shipping.

Please send all necessary materials to the following address:

Everest and/or Belarc Advisor might help.

googled this and found people used:

    "HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Valve>CounterStrike>Settings

then look for the word "Key." (without the period)"

if that doesn't work, i believe someone also said that Belarc works... as the guy above me mentioned...

For reference, neither Everest nor Belarc finds any key on my system.

In the registry key ANHEDONIC suggests the only value named "key" I have "1234567890123" as data. If that's my CD Key then I'm the Queen of Sheba.
