Just curious if there are any user opinions on VIPRE AntiVirus and AntiSpyware (makers of CounterSpy)? What do you think of it's effectiveness (how well do you like it)? By the way, it's a PAY program, in case you didn't know.

It's a relatively new application that is supposed to be pretty lightweight on resources. I think the antispyware portion might actually be CounterSpy bundled in? I didn't see it on AV-Comparatives, so apparently it's not as well known as some of the other antivirus apps, such as Norton, AVG, Avira, ESET, etc...

Based upon the small number of reviews I've come across so far (PC Mag and CNet) the "experts" seem to give it good marks, but I think the reviews may have been conducted while the product was still in beta.

    Thanks.

I'm a beta tester for Sunbelt. I've tested CounterSpy, versions 1, 1.5 and 2 and now VIPRE v3 (currently beta testing the new engine 3.5 which will be released to the public in a week or two) since maybe December 2007 on a windows 2000 SP4 computer. I would say it works well, though some people are reporting scans take about 1 1/2 hours with the new engine. I currently have a 120 GB hd partitioned using 2K and XP, newly installed. When I do a deep scan, I was surprised to see that it scans the 2K side, which always had VIPRE running, and the XP side, which does not have VIPRE installed. My deep scan takes about 32-39 minutes and I can scan while I surf without a noticeable slowdown except the scan takes longer.
I do not download email so I don't have the email scanner working. Some are reporting a problem trying to send 4 MB attachments while running Outlook 2007.

I'm very happy with the product. In fact, when I beta tested CounterSpy, I purchased it for several computers. I did not do the same for VIPRE because I'm running AVG 8 which now includes anti-virus and anti-malware so the two won't work together.

If you have other questions, feel free to ask.
There is a closed forum for the beta testers so I'll go there and search for an answer for anything pertaining to XP and Vista since I tend not to pay much attention to those OSes.

Thanks for the information and the positive feedback on VIPRE.

I'm going to assume (perhaps mistakenly) that as a beta tester, you are more concerned with feature functionality than detection? If that is the case, have you (personally) done a detection comparison between VIPRE and any other software? I'm curious as to how it stacks-up against some of the bigger name players (again, I wasn't able to find any independent test results, other than the PC Mag review).

Also, everyone has a different opinion on what software is best, but for your machines (test and production), other than VIPRE, AVG, and CounterSpy, what "protection / security" software do you have installed (AV, Spyware, Firewall)?

    Thanks again.

I currently have 5 computers in my home. One computer has never been on the internet, so it has no security software and another is an eeepc running linux so I have nothing on it (I'm behind a router which offers me a firewall).
Of the three remaining computers: All comuters run an old Version of ZoneAlarm, SpywareBlaster and SuperAntispyware
    a) HP notebook which was used to do the Sunbelt beta testing because it isn't my main computer, now runs AVG 8 free
    b) Built desktop and my main Windows computer: currently running 2K with VIPRE
XP side is running Malewarebytes (free), AVG 8 free
    c) My husband's computer running 2K has Paid Malwarebytes, AVG 8 free

I'm really impressed with Malwarebytes that if I weren't running VIPRE, I'd buy that.
I also wouldn't be without SpywareBlaster.

If you go the free route, then I'd suggest AVG 8 and malwarebytes. They co-exist nicely even both monitoring in real time (that's how I have my husband set up). Only the paid malwarebytes will do realtime monitoring and auto-updating.

No. I never download email, so I never install any email scanner. I do want something monitoring in realtime be it VIPRE or AVG. Both of these are anti-malware and anti-virus combined so you can not have them on one computer.

As far as comparing...I'd need to uninstall one program and install another so there is no way I would test this.
I have no idea how VIPRE compares in detection to other products. (The only thing I do know is that Sunbelt's firewall is really bad).

Thanks again for the information. It gives me a better idea on what to try on a secondary machine.

I'm more of a ZoneAlarm person myself, but am considering trying PC Tools Firewall Plus or Comodo Firewall.
