Virtual CD questions

I had a thread a while back and I was asking about some virtual CD apps... well I finally got around to trying Alcohol 52% today. But now I have the virtual drive listed in My Computer all the time (I haven't rebooted yet to see if it survives a restart). I guess I thought that when I closed Alcohol, the drive would go too. You know what would be really cool? If there was an 'on demand' virtual drive program. You could right click on any image file (.iso, .mds, .nrg, .bin, .daa, etc) and the option to mount it would be right there, then and only then would the drive appear in My Computer. When you're done using it, you could right click the file or the drive, and select 'un-mount' and the drive would be gone. Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't even think I really have a question here.... maybe I'm just looking for input, or maybe I've been drinking coffee all afternoon and can't stop typing.....

Oh yeah.... I do have a question.... so right now Alcohol 52% has a drive in My Computer. What if I launch a different virtual drive app, will there be issues? Should I uninstall one before trying another? Basically, I think I want to try a few different ones and then stick with what I like best.....

Anyone? How do I get rid of the virtual drive? Do I have to uninstall Alcohol to 'turn off' the virtual drive?

I use PowerISO and Daemon Tools for mounting drives but do it so rarely that I can't be too specific.

In Daemon tools it uses Add/Remove Virtual Drive to create the Drive.
It uses mount/unmount when referring to the image(file).
So you add a VD then mount the image. When done you unmount the image and remove the drive.

In PowerISO you set the number of drives from 0 to 1-10 (usually 1) then mount the image and when finished unmount the image and set the number of drives to 0(disable).

I'm sure Alcohol has the same sort of thing. Just remember the terminology is usually mount/unmount for the image file and Add/Remove to get rid of the drive itself.

Does the number of VD here in this dialog have an option of zero? http://support.alcohol-soft.com/kno...15014&title=How+can+i+add+new+Virtual+Devices

I have PowerISO also, but I didn't know it had a virtual drive option (duh ). I just now fired it up, and sure enough, there it is. Does PowerISO mount .mds images created by Alcohol? What about Daemon? I haven't used Daemon because there's been talk of it installing malware/spyware. I haven't really messed around with Alcohol too much yet, I haven't had the time, but I'll check it out a little more deeply and see if there is an option to disable/turn off the VCD....
    Thanks...

EDIT- I found the setting, but if I hadn't read sach's post I probably wouldn't have thought to set the drives to zero (duh  ). Alcohol required a reboot to remove the VCD, hopefully PowerISO doesn't require a reboot and will support other images. If anyone else comes across this problem with Alcohol, you'll find no help in the "help" files, so here's a screen shot that should help. On the main Alcohol window, under Options, click General. Then use the screen shot below for reference. Be sure the box for "Remount images on reboot" is unchecked.

    Thanks again sach!

Sorry Dlb, I just don't know enough about it to answer. I believe a virtual drive created by any program can be used by any other for mounting images. So if you leave a VD created by Alcohol in My Comuter, PowerIso can mount an image to it.

But as far as proprietary file formats, I'm really uncertain. I've seen around that MagicIso and PowerIso cannot open each other's proprietary formats (.uif is one of them). I just use PowerIso to edit an .iso before burning and Daemon when I want to install off an .iso image without burning to CD/DVD. One program can probably do both but it is habit for me to do it separately.

I haven't used Alcohol in a couple of years, I only ever used it for burning and Nero does that fine.

Thanks anyway.... you did help get the drive turned off ;) I guess I'll just have to mess around with the various VD apps and see which ones I like best....
