    Hi,
as far as I know it is 'Legal' to make personal backups of your own games.
does anyone what software backs up (make virtual disks that run on a virtual drive) for :
    F.E.A.R
    Far Cry
    flight sim 2002
    rome total war
    silent hunter III
    GTA vice city
    neverwinter nights
    Championship Manager 4

I know that Sly Softs CloneCd is excellant and backs up many games but not the above games.
    Thanks.

Building on this, there is a freeware version called Alcohol 52%, which should allow you to image your game discs, and mount the images as virtual drives.

Note that if you plan to go this route, you will have to reinstall most games, as the drive letter used to run the disc will change.

thanks, the bit about reinstalling because of a different drive letter is very clever.

alcohol 120 doesn't change any drive letters...... it shouldn't....... should just add it on as the next letter available...... but even if alcohol 52 does do something as stupid as changing drive letters you can change them back yourself......

    Been there, done that :)

Worth it to run games from the HDD, though. Not to mention keeping the physical media in good condition.

You're right, but that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying if he had originally installed from his physical drive d:, and then later mounted an image of the disc to virtual drive e:, chances are that it won't run the current installation. The game will expect a disc in drive d:. Its a security feature of modern games. Nothing to do with Alcohol.
