Here is a message I just received from my Computer.

Application popup: Windows - Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low: Your
system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of
your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests
for some applications may be denied. For more information, see
    Help.

Are there any computer procedures I should do as a result
    of receiving such a message?

    Thanks,

    Maggie

Maggie what OS are you using?

Is this the first time you have had this message or is it appearing frequently?

Did you install anything new before the message appeared?

Does it happen at boot or at shutdown?

What software were you using at the time?

Have you ever adjusted your virtual memory settings, if you have you may have set it too low for a particular software app to cope with, also if you had multiple programs open at once you may have filled the VM up and the OS was alerting you to this.

    Hi Halo,

    Thank you for your response.

    OS Is Windows XP Home.

This is the first time this message has appeared.

No, I haven't installed any new programs.

When the message appeared, I wasn't even working
on it. I was away from the computer and happened
to walk by and noticed the message.

No message at bootup or shutdown.

I had my Opera Browser running at the time of the message.

I haven't changed any settings on the computer.
I am trying to recall if I had multiple programs open just
before that message. That could be what happened.
To tell you the truth I really don't remember. Yesterday,
I bought my neighbors' computer at their garage sale.
    Gateway with 17 inch monitor,Windows 98
and printer, plus software and 6 boxes of blank floppy
diskettes for such a low price that I couldn't believe it, so
I was playing on two computers all day yesterday.

Anyway, I really appreciate you responding to my message.
I'm a novice when it comes to these types of problems,
so I'd be interested in hearing any comments you might have
    about the virtual memory.

    Maggie :)

Congrats on the PC bargain :)

If this is the first and only time you have had that message pop up then I wouldnt really be too bothered by it as XP does tend to manage the virtual memory setting very well and maybe it just needed expanding abit... dunno why as you said you were not doing much on it at the time! ( "Quirky Moment" I guess )

Some great info on the XP Virtual Memory settings and how to adjust them for maximum performance ( I tend to personally have mine set to a custom setting of a MAX and MIN of the same size.. )

if you do keep getting that message Maggie, repost and we can then get to whats causing it.

    HI Halo,

Thanks for responding again, to my message.

Sorry for delay in writing back. It's been a busy
    morning at my house.

I will check out the links that you mentioned and
will get back in touch if I start having more messages
    regarding Virtual Memory.

I am still so excited about the deal I got on that
Gateway computer. I'm having great fun poking
around the hard drive to see what is on the computer.

Major Geeks is such an awesome website. Spending
time here, I've learned some things about security for
computers. I've learned about how to protect my computer from
spyware and have gotten and used the programs you all
recommend. I've dumped Norton's System Works,
in favor of one of the programs you all recommend,
Avast, which I like. I have learned alot by just sitting
here reading through the messages asking for help and all of
your responses, guiding people through their troubles with
their computers. Most of all, you all have been patient
with me, a newbie, and have taken the time to talk
with me about my computer problems. I am very
    grateful for that.

    Thanks again,
    Maggie :)

    Re: Virtual Memory setting???

Absolutly nothing wrong with your settings Clark :)

Maggie, I'm really glad you have found MGs of help its a testament to the founders Tim & Jim that this place is of great help to its members, all too offen forums dont take too kindly to new users questions they think they are dumb and silly questions and dismiss any help... im glad in this case MGs and a few other help forums I'm a part of DO offer as much help as possible to new and inexperiened users, thus giving them the knowledge to pass on to others and in this age of spyware and other nastys its needed more.

Hello, I have a Gateway Intel Pentium4 2.00GHz 256MB of RAM, Windows XP.
I was receiving the Virtual Memory too low message at start up of my computer. Then it started shutting down. and then it got to the point were everytime I tried to turn it on it would not boot I would get to Windows and then it would shut-down again. I gave the computer to a friend and he reformatted and reinstalled my computer programs (as you can tell I am not a computer whiz at all) So he seemed to have fixed the problem. But 2 days late which is today as I was on my computer I noticed that my Page File usage kept increasing it started out at about 240000 and slowley kept rising till it peaked at 645936 at which point I received the virtual memory too low message again and it increased to 756240. Do you have any idea what the problem may be?
