    (See my user name)

Recently I have tried to download a few files from the file section and my antivirus program won't let me.

I am using AVIRA - PRO.

    The files are:
    FreehideIP (latest one)
    winscp571.zip
    wisecare365_mg.exe
    OWshredder

I accept and appreciate there are such things as "False positives" but would just like to make sure I am not ........... being too paranoid.

    Thanks.

A good tool before you install any file is VirusTotal

I just reanalyzed the .exe for FreehidIP: https://www.virustotal.com/uk/file/...f71829f223596172acf972ed/analysis/1428796012/

Avira is not showing anything when I analyze it. Only 3 out of 54 are showing anything which means its a clean file.

Two things: Avira is a good AV, but it does pull a lot of false positives. Another is the type of software you are trying to install. Any covert stuff like hiding your IP can often flag your AV and cause it to block it.

Check your settings in Avira. I have Avast set to scan for PUPs. It will not allow me to download any program that's bundled with PUPs. But, a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) is not a virus.
With VirusTotal, as mentioned by LauraR, you can also scan the site you intend downloading from.
Lastly, allways carefully look at the installation process. If available, select the advanced feature.

BTW I downloaded Wise Care 365 from majorGeeks and it's clean. On the details page of every program listed by MajorGeeks, there will be a warning if the program contains any PUPs.

    Update:
For other reasons I had to re-install AVIRA (missing .dll file therefore missing icon).
While it was not installed I tried again, the a fore mentioned files were still blocked by "someone".

How would I find out which program is doing this?

    (on a tangent)

I didn't get an e-mail notification for the second reply after reading the first.

    Perhaps Windows Defender?

    Ok.

    I'm open to that.

    Next "idiot" question:

Where/how do I control it and turn it off to allow me to download said files?

I'll try to do leg work ITMT, but....... any help appreciated.

    Update:

I think I found how to do it.

    Files are downloading.

    No, foot in mouth.

    Still won't download.

What I did do was go into the control panel, security center and unticked the option about suspicious files.

Are you able to post a screenshot of any alert or blocking message that you receive when trying to download a file?
At what point is the download blocked? As soon as you attempt to download the file or upon download completion or ..?
Can you download anything at all from anywhere? (e.g. a document, picture, other)

    I am using Firefox 37.0.1

Maybe it is blocking the files.

It is confusing (embarrassing?) when the user can't control the computer in a way he understands.

    Sorry, I missed that.

Thanks very much for the help.

It seems that Firefox built in phishing and malware protection is blocking the downloads that are available via the Internode mirror.
(Special thanks for this must go to Google’s Safe Browsing service.)

The easiest solution is to click on either 'Download@MajorGeeks' or 'Download@Authors Site'.

Thanks for the suggestion of the links.

I didn't know the subtle differences of the links.

Have you tried downloading the programs using Internet Explorer? All 3 are safe (no bundleware) according to MajorGeeks.
    Click Download@Authors Site

    Sorry for not replying sooner.

I shall try using the "other" links and not via internode, the local server.

I don't use IE and have not put most of the updates, so it may not be a good idea.

I use IE9 with no updates. Downloading from MajorGeeks is safe.
