    Hello,

Recently I've noticed terrible system performance and have pointed it towards a virus. When looking at task manager, there is a process called "System" *without the .exe at the end. This process continually uses large amounts of processing power and causes my computer to hiccup consistently every second in games, and slows the loading of all apps.

I simply cannot remove it. I cannot disable system restore, it gives me an error and remains turned on. I cannot boot into safe mode for I blue screen on start up. Hijack this fails to detect it. Anti Vir, Kaspersky, and the trend micro site fails to be rid of it.

I'm on Windows Xp, and I've had many viruses before but never has one been such a pain to get rid of :(

    Any suggestions?

It may not be a virus. You might have some system files corrupt and the associated services therefore are running all screwy. If possible, click Start > Run, type cmd and press enter. In the 'DOS' window, type sfc /scannow and insert your WinXP CD when prompted. You could also try a System Restore or even reload Windows 'over the top' of itself (a safe re-install) to repair your system core files....

System is not a virus but a system process, hince the reason you can't kill it. Its a default process to contain cpu when nothing else is. Its not your problem. I suggest you follow the malware guide and start there.

Thanks for the reply but it didn't seem to work. I entered my XP CD and it said it was the wrong CD. It then asked me to enter a service pack 2 cd which I don't have because I downloaded the update.

When it asks for the service pack 2 cd click on the Browse option and point it to this location:

    C:/Windows > I386 folder > Sp2 Cabinet file

    and click OK.
