    Hi,
I should say that I am new in this forum. Here is my problem:

XP Home with SP2, Windows critical updates current as of 8/16/05.
My Norton Antivirus has current updates and abends when doing full sysem scan. SPYBot14 does the same thing.
Otherwise my system runs find. This is Toshiba Satelite notebook, 2435-S255 with 512 Mb ram. Have ran Defrag, DiskCheck and were ok. I must say that you have some helpful instructions.

I found this site and started at Getting Prepared:
    1. Disabled System Restore
2.Didn't have network services listed - maybe not in XP Home
    3. Enabled viewing all hidden files, folders & extensions
    4. Downloaded tools, installed, etc as directed.
    5. In Safe mode, ran the following:
BitDefender - abended after 3-4 minutes, ran again and abended. Stopped the program once it found virus and report said that the virus was:
    application.Adware.NewDotNet.B.Dropper1
Ran RavAntivirus - abended after 15 min
Ran McAfee AVERT Stinger - abended
    6. Ran CCleaner successfully
    7. Ran Ad-Aware SE ok. I could not seem to install Ad-Aware VX2 Cleaner Plug-in. Any suggestion of how I install the Plug-in?
    8. Ran CWShredder - coolwebsearch was not found
I searched forum and using Google but I could not seem to find how to remove or deal with Application.adware.NewDotNet.B.Dropper1
    Can you help me?
    Thanks,
    Ken

Thank you for the web sites. I printed them and read them.

I will describe what I have done and found out.

From the doxdesk.com/parasite... , I did several searches for newdotnet..., but did not find any on my system. First I twice verified that I still had the enable of hidden files, folders and extensions. Some examples of searches were: newdotnet*.* quicksearch new.net newdot*.dll firstlook etc.

Even application.adware.newdotnet.b.dropper1 was not there. Prior to submitting the first report, I had ran BitDefender 3 times so maybe it was deleted.

I also checked Add/Remove programs for the various entries. I looked in Program Files folder and Windows folder but did not find any newdotnet files, uninstaller, et.

I decided to run Bitdefender again. I ran it several times and following is the length of time it ran before abending:
    5min, 7min, 20min, 22min, 10min, 11min
I decided to stop after the times started decreasing.

I then ran Ravantivirus - ran longer than my first time by about 10 min longer

Ran McAfee Avert Stinger and it ran 20 min where before my first report, it ran about 3 min.

I tried TrojanScan but couldn't get it to run even though I made sure that I set Security Options to Default.

Ran Trendmicro free online virus scan - ran 20 min and quit.

Does it help to rerun any of these programs? What is the next step(s)?
    Thank you much,
    Ken

    Additionally from www.iamnotageek.com,
I checked Registry and there was no new.net startup.

There were no processes, ndn..., uninstall.... in Startup tab of msconfig

    Thanks,
    Ken

I did some more testing by restoring a full backup of C drive. At first I could run Norton AntiVirus full scan without quitting. However, one day later the PC would quit when running full scan of Norton AntiVirus and BitDefender.
I tried running Registry Mechanic and it quit after a few minutes also.

What should I do next? Start with Hijack?
    Thanks,
    Ken

Start by paying a visit to the SPYWARE FORUM and follow their recommendations in the "stickies".

Failing that, post there, or maybe one of the admin staff can move this post over.

They are best equipped to help you.
