Do you have Black icons or just black screen?
Control pannel: display: Effect's tab check box = show icons using all possible colors and Appeareance Tab: for colors text, boarders, windows, etc.

On your black screen, right click anywhere what pops up? what options are displayed?

And at the bottom of the screen where it says.. 'start' on the lower left hand side..it is black
If you click on start.. and the rest of it all pops up....all of the icons there are black too.

I think nemesis is on to something. You might check your video card in case the little booger -- or a game he downloaded -- screwed up the settings.
    Good Luck

If you are unable to reach Safe Mode to clear out the ShellIconCache to reset your desktop icons, you may want to download one of the desktop tweak tools such as TweakUI from Microsoft which have a rebuild icons function: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;190643 which can be found under the Repair tab.

Alternatively, you can use ITweakU Lite (here at http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=79) which has similar options under the Desktop link for Clear Cache and Rebuild Icons.

    Hi Adele,
I had the same problem a long time ago... This is just a shot in the dark, and I recommend doing everything above (that everyone else suggested) but at the time, MY problem was that someone had adjusted the settings on my monitor. ASUS mentioned this too, but this is "non-geek" language.

    Can you do the following:
*Right click on your desktop/Left click "Properties"/Click "Settings"

I have a notebook running Windows 98, and I have chosen "High Color [16 bit]." Now, click on the "Advanced" tab. Under "Performance," my hardware acceleration is on "Full." These settings could effect your display also.

It's just something (easy) to try first. :D Don't panic...

    Gina
    :)

PS: Does anyone else know of other properties under "settings" that could effect in this way? I can't remember all of them... ;)

    Adele,
I have to go to dinner but will try to check back in before I go to sleep. I remember having the same problem so don't worry, you'll get it fixed. :) Just follow the advice here... Let us know if anything we've suggested works.

    Peace & Take care,
    Gina

    Adele,

Did you ever try Maxwell's suggestion? My nephew had the same problem once when he was using Win98 and that is exactly what he had to do. I would definitely try that if you can get to Safe Mode. Good Luck

    Hello again Major Geeks!

    Adele,
Tax season has kept me swamped and I am just now reading this!
I'm glad the suggestion worked; every now and then my vast knowledge of the thousands of ways to mess up a computer when you don't really know what you're doing (as your stepson did) will come in handy.

    I'm glad it worked.

    Peace & Take care,
