Virus Problems with Norton

Hoping someone can help. I'm running XP with NAV04. SOMETHING got on the hard drive that causes the following...
during boot up, SYSTEM32 folder gets maximized on screen

then when I try to open IE, it opens for perhaps a quarter of a second and closes.

the same thing occurs with NAV if I try to open it. This happens in real mode, safe mode, debug mode, etc. etc.

same thing for task manager window, so I can't scan the drive and I can't look at the task manager to see what's running.

I ran msconfig and disabled all pre-loading but no help...

can't find these symptoms on Norton's KB. Any help GREATLY appreciated!!!

 

My personal opinion, from experience:

Get rid of Norton's, it is nothing but bloatware and protection is mediocre at best.
Get a good free antivirus, such as Avast. It has found things that Norton has not.

 

i second the 'get rid of Norton in favor of Avast'.

not only does avast catch things norton does not, it also uses less system resources, so you should see a slight performance gain.

 

I hate to say this, but did you try it in safe mode?

go down to the lower left side to panda active scan the free online scan
it will scan your whole computer and get rid of any virus' on your computer for free, Panda is a great program, give it a try.

 

I tried it in SAFE MODE

I can't get online because I can't get IE to keep a window open. It closes before I can do anything.
