Virus > Registry > Computer hangs every seconds

Hello! I have a problem here.

First, my computer was infected by a virus. I believe the virus' name was Sality, which infected certain .exe files on my PC and etc. Then I used Avira, and removed the virus.

But, yeah it messed up with my registry files. To the point that I can't access Task manager, can't access cmd.exe on Start > Run and more. So I downloaded Advanced System Optimizer and had the Registry cleaned and optimized. But seems like nothing changed, and the situation worsened. Every like 2 seconds, my computer hangs for a second, and goes back to normal again.

Here are my PC Specs:

Windows XP Professional SP 2
Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20 GHZ
1GB RAM

I've done the scans but still the problem persists.

I'm posting it here since I guess the main problem is that my computer hangs every seconds, and boots up slowly, and not any type of malware anymore.

 

Guessing's not much good when it comes to troubleshooting, the malware removal process here will ensure you're clean and the resulting logs may give us some clues as to what else may need repairing.

I'd run with TimW's suggestion first, if that doesn't clear up your problems, go with plodr's.

When you've been given the all clear, come back and we'll try to fix up your Windows.
