Do you guys think that Norton is a good way to go for Anti-Virus Software?

    My thoughts on the question:

Norton is ok as an AntiVirus.. BUT only if its the standalone or the Enterprise versions, in Norton Internet Security guise, and I will say this as personal experience of it that its heavy on resourses and a PITA in relation to blocking things you dont want blocked with the built in firewall ( O&O for example needed to be allowed each update to the NIS software ) if you want to uninstall it for any reason, you may as well re-install the OS as it hooks into allsorts.

as for other options I wouldnt pay for one these days, if you can install a set of core security apps and keep your OS upto date and surf safely ( NO clicking the popup "Click ME" or "Click me to remove your spyware" etc etc ) and are careful with what you download ergo if you use p2p to leech free stuff not all that glissens is gold! most of the time they harbour virii and other nastys ;)

some core free options I install and am glad to say am still virus and spyware free since I started on the internet back in the glorious days of 9600baud.. feel the need for speed :)

Spywareblaster... doesnt scan but does help protect against sites and URLs that may give you a dose of something nasty
Avast or AVG... both good Antivirus apps for free ( paid NOD32, Kaspersky are very good )
Windows Defender/Spybot Search and Destroy/Ad-Aware... all good antispyware scanners ( Defender is good as a first defence option )
A2 aka A-Squared... competent trojan/dialer etc scanner, scans for items other AVs dont, works inconjunction with your resident AV.

but also as a bit of light reading give this guide a good read How to Protect yourself from malware!

Personally, I don't like NIS any more than any of these guys. However, if you are dealing with people who think that AOL is still the best ISP out there, you're going to have a tough sell. If you do have a comp with NIS on it, just upgrade the RAM as much as you can. It doesn't remove the problem, but it does help mediate the ungodly amount of system resources eaten up. NIS will make your life miserable with only 256MB of RAM. I suggest, if you are in this boat, upgrade to 512MB (or preferably 1GB if you can).
