virus?

a friend has an HP, running Windows XP. The computer comes up saying at random times, that "the computer has a virus and will shut down in 1 minute". Then it shuts down, then restarts. I checked it for the worm, but I didn't find it, and spybot couldn't find anything. Any ideas?

 

Does he have any kind of AV sotware? Go to Symantec and do an online scan or get a free download of some AV software to do a thorough scan.

What is saying he has a virus?

 

Sure sounds like msblast or <insert 500 millionth variant> of it.

Okay, thanks for that preliminary info. I believe they have AVG on that computer (It's in St. Cloud, about 70 miles from here). As far as I know, it's windows that's telling them that there is a virus. I've never heard of windows doing that. And it says there is a worm. This is weird. I ran the big worm fix program, but that didn't do it. ms blaster? I think I've heard of that. Have to research that more....Thanks guys, you are great!

 

Sounds like the Blaster worm.

It is the blaster worm. Prolly varient F or G.

If you don't want to remove it via manually, then use Stinger.

Its a brutal free proggy and it worked on 5 machines at my biz.

IT IS ALSO DUE TO THIS VIRUS AND SEVERAL OTHERS THAT I RECOMMEND ALL XP USERS TURN OFF THIER SYSTEM RESTORE.

This can hide in the restore dump and come back to haunt you....
