    Hi,
As my husband is visiting SF in May I would like him to buy me a Samsung Tablet. Being totally ignorant about SF stores does anyone have any advice as to the best places to buy such things? The only stores I have heard of are
Walmart and Best buy, in New York B & H are great but he is not going there this time. He is always awkward!!

He will be staying in China town for a while so anywhere near there would be great but I have no scruples in sending him all over the city if necessary.
Give him a purpose and a mission.:)

As far as I know, we don't have any San Fran members here. Typically, in the US, places like Best Buy, Walmart, Office Depot, Staples, OfficeMax, Apple (off the top of my head) are the big places to buy from.

If he's staying in a hotel, someone good to ask might be the concierge.

If he is going to be staying in San Fran for a while, you might consider going onto the US websites and looking there and having it shipped to where he is staying. San Fransisco has a very high sales tax (8.5%). I'm not sure what the laws are there, as they are different in each state, but if you get it from a site like Amazon, you may not have to pay the sales tax. Just something to consider.

I see you are in Australia. Is he getting one in the US because the prices are better?

thanks for the advice, that is what I wanted. the prices are generally better in the USA and as our dollar is stronger than yours it can be a big saving.
I actually want a Kindle touch 3G as well as a present for our son so he might be able to get one of those whilst he is there. We can only get the WiFi version here.
Strange that there are not many San Franciscans on the site, must be too busy surfing and partying!

I know that Best Buy and Target both carry Kindle Touches with 3G. I just bought one at Best Buy. I will tell you they only have the ones with ads on the screensaver. I was somewhat annoyed by that, but if it's something that doesn't bother you, you do get a 20-30 dollar discount from the non-ad one. If it does bother you, you should have him order from Amazon and have it delivered.

I did notice when I did a quick search that there's an Electronics store called Fry's Electronics in the San Fran area. I'm not sure how close it would be or what types of prices they have though. They do have a store locator on the website.

My west coast friends swear by Fry's, for just about anything. Me, I'd probably go to Best Buy, because I find their stores more suited to my taste. Fry's, to me, feels like I'm in a poorly-organized geek's basement. LOL Their prices are generally pretty good, however, and if you can catch a sale they're fabulous. But then the same is true of Best Buy.

I'm mostly with Sgt. Tibbs on Fry's. You'll occasionally catch some outrageous sale prices; however the deals in their newspaper ads have become rather ho-hum. Just like Best Buy, you'll also get the obligatory beat down on adding an extended warranty, $39 Monster USB cable, Norton, etc.

If you've never been to a Fry's, however, it is worth a visit if you have time. Overall, it's a cool store and they carry lots of unusual stuff you won't find at Best Buy. If you need cables or other PC accessories, go to the components (build-it-yourself PC) department. As an example, generic bagged USB cables near the hard drives and motherboards are as low as 99 cents; the brand name ones (same specs) near the notebook and desktop PCs are $8 and up (I worked at Fry's in Houston a few years ago and know most of their secrets ;) ).

Another great place for deals on PC's is MicroCenter (www.microcenter.com). On some entry level PCs, their in-store prices are lower than what my wholesalers charge. Their website shows they have a location in Silicon Valley/Santa Clara. Not sure how far this will be from where you're staying. If you want to check prices and availability before driving there, go to their web site and select the Silicon Valley location for real-time in-store pricing and availability.

Hope you have a great time in SF. :)

Hey, I'm in your area and used to live in So.Cal. :) I also own/run an I.T. co., amongst other things.:-

Google Maps comes up with quite a few P.C./Electronic stores, including the predictable Apple, Staples, Radio-shack, Best Buy, Office Depot, etc.:-

I think that A.U.D.'s are roughly at @1.06 U.S.D.'s at the moment, so yeah, our buying power is good at this time.
