If I download Vista 7 do I have to put it on a disk or just run the program.
Is 1 GB of ram good enough? I can put in another 256.

What is Vista 7? And if you mean an operating system, I wasn't aware anything but cracked versions could be downloaded.

    Hi

I agree with Solaris, what is the version of Windows you are talking about, can you link to the download?

As Windows Vista and Windows 7 are two completely different Operating Systems. But both will need to run ok, at least 2GB ram (both will run with 4GB happily), so NO, adding 256 (don't know what 256 is but guessing at 256mb) is not enough.

I posted that wrong. Where can I download Vista or Windows 7,
because windows xp soon will have no more support.

There's no legitimate downloads for those OSes except directly through Microsoft. MyDigitalLife used to post links to supposed legit ISOs which needed to be burned to DVD. However, Microsoft has issued a DMCA against hundreds of sites, MyDigitalLife being one of them.

So, your best bet is to purchase a DVD from Microsoft or get one from eBay or Amazon.com WITH COA/Product Key.

If you plan to use the same hardware etc. you currently have, I recommend to use Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor prior to downloading Win 7 or purchasing a disk. Here's the link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor
PS: I wouldn't recommend to go with Vista.

I am in accord with all that has been said in that you can only download from Microsoft but you will still need to purchase an activation key to be able to use the OS after 30 days without the Key your screen will just go black and be unresponsive (I know this because i once left it too long before activating a PC that i built).

As OMA said i would not go with Vista as this was not one of MSs best systems plus it will go the way of XP long before windows 7.

I personally have stayed with windows 7 which i consider to be the best that MS has produced not withstanding that windows 8 is the perfect platform for tablets but on a non touchscreen PC it is hard work.

As a final comment here at MGs we do not support any illegal downloads so it will be difficult to get any help from us if you choose to go that route.

Two other good, knowledgeable people with Linux are Hedon James and plodr if you don't hear from Adrenalyn.

I, peronally, have found that one of the best distros for "out of the box" device compatibility is Simply Mepis — but that's just my personal opinion.

There is an application I've used called Get Linux. It's available as an installer or a stand alone portable app. It monitors Distro Watch and has over 100 Linux distros available to download at any one time with descriptions of each.
