Vista and Ccleaner

A while ago I posted about a problem I was having with lost file associations for *.msc programs, (like services.msc). I was advised to perform sfc /scannow, which did not fix it. I found I could fix this by associating these files with mmc.exe, easy to do.

I assumed the problem was with updates but after fooling around some, I have confirmed that this is casued by Ccleaner's registry scanner, I just finished re-associating the services.msc, then ran the registry cleaner, then typing services.msc in the run command and found the association lost. It ran fine on several tries after the first re-association.

I am using Vista Home Premium on a HP 'puter but I don't think that's relevant.

I like to run Ccleaner functions frequently, but this re-association is an annoyance.

    Any advice from fellow geeks?

I'm skeptical that CCleaner is the cause of this. I have it installed on a Compaq Notebook running Vista Home Premium, and have not experienced this problem.

Can you examine CCleaner's findings from it's Registry scan very carefully to see exactly what items it's showing? Seems like you should be able to narrow this down to something specific if you do some testing. In other words, run CCleaner, then see whether the association problem occurs again. If it does, fix it, verify that it's fixed, then run CCleaner again and note exactly what it found.

You might start a discussion on this is CCleaner's forum, also.

Absolutely certain of this. Thank you for your reply, but while logged in to this forum, I tried the services.msc command and it worked. Then I ran the clean registry in Ccleaner and I again had to re-associate the command with mmc.exe file in System32 folder to make it run. When I Google search this issue, it seems to be a fairly common problem, although not related to Ccleaner.

I will check out the other forum you suggested as well, but I think the best experts are here. I tried to attach a Paint shot of the Ccleaner registry, but it is 123 KB, exceeding the maximum allowed.???

The two issues it lists are Resgistry Key HKCR:\.msc and HKCU:\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.Msc

If I "fix" these, services will not run until the .msc files are reassociated with mmc.exe.

    Does this explain anything?

Well, I see you're not the only person who has experienced this problem. See http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=13656

Why some people have the problem and others don't is odd. Since it's been reported in the "Bug Reporting" section of CCleaner's forum, I expect you may see this resolved in a fix at some point.
