Vista and file permissions

    I have a laptop that is using Windows Vista SP1. I am the owner/administrator on it, in fact, the only user on it. I want to update SpyBot to 1.6.2. It won't let it update certain files, such as Tools.dll, as it is marked read only. In the C:\Program Files (x86)\Spybot - Search & Destroy, I have the following permissions:
    Type Name Permission
    Allow TrustedInstaller Special
    Allow SYSTEM Full Control
    Allow Administrators Full Control
    Allow Users Read & Execute
    Allow CREATOR/OWNER Special

    Do I need to modify a folder with new permissions to get this to update? I've never had this problem before when I initially installed it.

    Guessing with you having an x86 Program Files folder you are running x64 Vista?


    Is this that you cannot update the full application from say version 1.5 to 1.6.2 or is it the definition updates are not installing?

    What I would try is to disable Spybot S&D as by default it blocks many areas that applications need to save files to as part of its security features, but I would try disabling Spybot version you have now and download the new version if not already then install but install by right click Run as Adminstrator.

    Or more so I would uninstall your old version and install the new again with Run as Administrator.

    If you have other security software installed disable it to update Spybot, some otehr apps may see its files as a threat. Also post the full error messages given.

    How do you tell if I have a x86 architecture? I am running Vista 64 bit version.

    That uninstall/reinstall did the trick; appreciate the suggestion. I wonder if I'll have to do this for other programs as well.
