Vista and Windows Updates

OK. This PC I'm taking about here is an EMachine running Vista Home Basic. It was not connected in any way to any internet or phone line. I had popped in a DVD movie and it was playing just fine. I walked away to do something else as I was more or less just testing the DVD drive to make sure it would play a movie OK. I came back about 10 minutes later, and the screen is 'Vista green' and it has the little spinning hoop and it says "Windows is configuring updates..." and that sat for a bit, spinning away, then it said "Shutting down..." and it did indeed shut down, and restart, and booted to the desktop. I promptly went to look at the automatic updates (which were turned on, of course) and it says that one is still left to be installed. Whaaa?!?!?!? The computer hasn't been turned on in probably 3 or 4 days, and today it was never connected to the internet. Let's say that 3 or 4 days ago it downloaded a bunch of updates but didn't install 'em, why would it do it today, and right in the middle of watching a movie? Freekin' Vista.....

 

Go to Control Panel and see if Updates are set to install at a certain time. I had the same problem.

 

They were set to automatic, the first choice in the list, and the time was set at 3:00am. But since it had been off for 3 or 4 days, it probaby decided to install 'em as soon as it had a chance. So I did change it to notify, but not download or install....
But why would it just cut into the middle of a DVD movie, install the updates, and reboot? I thought that when DVDs were playing everything else was kind of 'turned off' until the DVD was over, stuff like screen savers, power settings, virus scans and updates, all that stuff... I guess I was wrong.... I learn something new all the time...
