Hmm, yup sounds about right. I'm not rushing out to put Vista on my XP systems. the next OS I will look at in any depth will be Linux.

The unfortunate thing is the article is nothing more than a rant and assumption on Vista sells. The inquirer is a biased site, and they make it very clear. You couldn't get accurate reporting from them if you wanted to.

They don't back up their reasons for anything they say either, which makes them :crap in my opinion. One computer company doesn't decide what/how well OS sales are. Dell has been known to give in to their customers before, this is no different.

As for it being monopolistic behavior, thats a load of :crap too. You can't monopolize one of YOUR own products, LOL. Now, if they were squeezing another company, that would be different. XP is old, and MS has decided to drop it.

rik_na, Linux is fun, but I think you might be in for a surprise. Its not ready to replace Windows at all.

erm Microsoft is a monopoly? So say the EU or there would not have been that whole antitrust thing that Microsoft tried to appeal last year. the point I think is this, name a mainstream non microsoft os. Cant? also look at the whole bundling of IE which I think they used to try to drive Netscape out of business. Not really fair competition. sounds like a monopoloy to me. Well my tuppence worth.

Yeah, I know very little about Linux, but want to see whats it capabilities are. I use multiple drives on my systems so i can change os's at will. I know I can boot Linux of a CD, but I like things to be seperate.

I have used and bought Vista, I like it.

I am more pissed about the fact that M$ is selling XP and Office bundled for $3 in China. If they can sell it for $3 there, why isn't it selling for $3 here? Why is the bundle $600 or better?

Ok, this requires a bit of reading on your own part.

It is their product. Dell does not own the actual software, they are liecensed to redistribute it. It is ALL Microsoft, be it XP, or Vista.

Now read the definition of a monopoly:

    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/monopoly

I'm saying that MS retiring Windows XP is not monopolistic behavior. Its out with the old, in with the new and they have that right. Now whether they have a monopolistic hold on the OS market...well thats a different discussion for a different thread.

Not really the same thing, right?

Well, its XP Starter Edition, which is crap anyway....but its simple economics. Not every country has an economy that supports paying those software costs, and unfortunately, we do. Remember, Mr. Gates is also the largest contributor to charities, so we know he likes to give money away. Just only to places that need(or appear to) it. Thats my opinion anyway.

    Don't care.

I want to only pay $3 for my XP that I need to replace Vista.

I like how M$ gives away software packages at meetings and what not for free. Full versions of $500 software given to any one that shows up to various seminars. That is when I decided that maybe there was a bit of price gouging going on.
