Hi. My "D"drive ("Recovery") is 'full' (only 1.7MG of 9.99GB free). I suppose this is what's preventing me from using my system restore.

Can anyone possibly tell me why this has occurred - and how I can correct it please?

    thanks in advance...

Will this --> http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-102 eliminate the constant 'Low Disk Space' pop-up I get every time I start this machine please?

I've never gone into the registry (that I can recall) - for good reason I think.

    Thanks in advance...

I have Vista Home Basis and only 1.1G of my 14.7G drive D is being used for recovery files. Is your machine performing backups to the D drive? If yes, this is a waste if your hard drive crashes, backups should go to an external source, MG here even provides one.

Try this it may help :

The D drive is almost certainly the recovery partition from which you
restored back to factory settings. You should not add stuff (i.e. backups)
    to this partition.

Easiest thing is to hide the partition from Vista (not from the restore
    operation).

    Start orb
    type computer management
select computer management from program area of list
    select storage/disk management

for Disk 0 there should be multiple partitions showing one of which is D
right click it, change drive letters and paths
the D: entry should be highlited, click on Remove the partion will now have
no drive letter and Vista will not see it.

This change can be reversed, no damage to the data in the partition, and the
partition is still available for restore if necessary.

Because Vista no longer sees this partition you will no longer get warnings
    about it being full.

As far as backups are concerned you will have to select somewhere else to
    backup your files.
I backup to DVD /RW but that is a lot of DVD's. Others backup to external
USB drives, which is pretty inexpensive nowdays.

    Rusty ! :)

Well thanks, and it may well be the same "subject", but as I have had that *exact same* annoyingly-incessant pop-up prompting me to back-up (and then not being able to utilize that specific prompt) since I first asked about over a year ago (as you have pointed-out), these two most recent replies here have greatly enhanced my user-experience, in addition to supplementing my own, personal (though still flawed and limited) KB.

    Thanks just the same.

    Thank you.

Just so I am clear, in addition to your instructions here, are you recommending/suggesting that I also *REVERSE* the change(s) I made, which were based-on RustyJacks' post please?

Would this be your Dell Vista machine of old, Greg?
If so please don't mess with the partitions. Dell uses a non standard boot manager and puts the recovery in a unusual location. You can prevent the pc booting if you use standard windows partition or boot sector commands.

    Hello Eric, and thanks.

This is my Vista machine that I've had for almost two years now (you had primarily helped me [EXTENSIVELY] with my XP Dell).

A great deal of this is over my head, I simply wanted to put end to an very annoying pop-up prompt to perform a "Back-up".

I plan to leave this as it is because I am not *currently* seeing an issues (other than things do *seem* a bit slower since I've attempted to work on this.

Thank you again - and oh, I am ALL EARS to any further suggestions...

To put an end to the annoying popup about backing up, buy some disks (Win7 will only use DVDs, not sure about Vista) and do the backup.

I set up several Win 7 computers for someone and am familiar with Dell's "reminders". Just do it and the reminder is history.

Thank you very much (again) ... though I've never done it - I will try it! I did learn recently (sort of) to burn music to disk, so I presume it's a similar operation (?).

W7 will also back up to an external (USB) hard drive.

And yes, if you have not already made the backup do it asap. Simply get some DVDs (you need the -r variety) click on the link and follow the instructions - it really is very easy.
