vista backups

My wife bought me a new laptop and now i have a new problem. I think this is the right place for this. I travel a lot and when i do i like to watch movies. what i do not like to do is travel with my movie collection. What i want to do is make backup copies of my dvds.(legally purchased) my laptop has the hardware and i am familer with the software (at least some of it) but i heard vista has security protocols to prevent what i am legally doing on my other machine. so my question is will vista let me make backups? I mean good backups or would i be better off running a dual boot system and make my backups with ubuntu and windows vista as my email machine?

my new toy is:
1.7 core duo with 2 gigs of ram
160 gig hardrive
gforce go 7200 256 meg video
dual layer dvd with llightscribe
tv tuner......etc.
