Vista Crash After Downloading Windows Automatic Update.

Windows did an automatic update yesterday - 3rd July 2013 - after which my Vista machine was totally locked in normal mode.
In safe mode I did a system restore to the previous night but the machine stayed frimly locked.
Then tried a restore to Sunday last.
Still absolutely locked in normal mode.
Cursor just seems to float over everything rather than right or left click.
Safe mode seems fine.
I am very concerned about this.
Can anyone help.
It is 24 hours now.

Do you have Vista cd ? If yes you must repair your system using this guide

Many thanks for the welcome, and also for the reply.
I will go and look for the CD - machine is 6 years old but
was working well - and will go gently through the steps in the
article, although a bit overwhelemed at the moment.
