I have a compaq presario with windows vista 32 bit it has been freezing after startup after about 10 minutes it starts to run something in the background and I have nothing to work with. I just tried starting it in safe mode with networking and it works great. no running on, no freezing, fast. any idea how to pinpoint the problem. I read on one of the other posts that microsoft security essentials can cause this. I am using it. any idea would help. thanks

Hi my friend , what is the programmes do you install in your laptop ? At the bottom of the laptop there is a sticker with product and model number , you must inform about this :wave

OK, so we have an older laptop, running Vista, most likely entry level dual core CPU, a 5400 RPM HDD, and it most likely has 1GB of RAM unless it was upgraded. If this is the original install it could be quite bloated by now.

What type of anti-virus are you running other than Essentials if any?

How many programs run at start up that do not need to?

no other antivirus except essentials. I just ordered a ram upgrade. I upped to 2gb. maybe that will take care of the problem. like you said I think it's bloated. upgrade will be in in a couple days. thanks

What about the programs running in the background at startup?

How many icons are next to your clock?

I don't know what you mean next to my clock. where should I look for that? that is one of the things I don't know how to find out whats running in the background.

it turns out that windows defender is turned off and when I hit the line to activate it, it errs out. so I'll try to figure out how to start it manually. thanks

MS Security Essentials will turn off Windows Defender. You can not run both programs together.

Q: Does installing Microsoft Security Essentials disable Windows Defender
A: Microsoft Security Essentials should disable Windows Defender on Vista and Windows 7 and uninstall it from XP. In some cases, this does not happen automatically.

Q: What happens if I do not disable or uninstall Windows Defender if I am using Microsoft Security Essentials?
A: If Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender are both running, your system may experience performance degradation and other problems caused by the conflict of two services providing real time protection simultaneously.
