Before you even think about doing this, go to the website of the manufacturer of your computer and put in your model. See if there are any drivers for XP and your computer. If there are not, do not try to install XP. The result will be bad. You may not have video, the sound might not work. If you have a wireless chip, that might not work. You need XP drivers for every piece of hardware in your computer.

As plodr said, definitely make sure that there are drivers available. I also highly suggest that you download them before hand and "check them" as much as possible before doing the reformat and install. Example, make sure that you can download them, and if they are zips, make sure that you can unzip them. I've had trouble downloading and unzipping drivers before myself. You might also want to do a quick google search to see if there are any known issues or conflicts. If the manufacturer provides drivers specifically for XP then you are most likely good to go, but it takes only a few minutes to check for known issues and make sure that you can download and unzip.

I'd also make sure you have a recovery disk and your Vista license. I'm not sure if you can legally use the license on another computer or not, but you did pay for it when you bought the computer, so make sure you have it. And the recovery disk will come in very handy in case something doesn't go right with the XP install.

Now... Reformatting and installing XP, even though the procedure is fairly simple and pretty consistent across the board, can be slightly different depending on the computer. For example, on some laptops, you have to make a simple BIOS change for the XP installer to recognize the drive... Something simple, but something that we'd need to know the model of the computer to be able to know.

    Hope this helps. :)

A wise decision, IMHO. It is usually better to keep the OS that was installed when the computer was purchased. It usually just runs better than any upgrade or downgrade. (except maybe for linux ;) )
