Hi, i have vista home premium and would like to upgrade to windows 7 pro. However it does not let me upgrade, because of the upgrade paths. I would have to do a clean install. Is there a way to backup everything from my home premium and restore it all on my freshly installed windows 7?

    Hi

Sadly if you wish to have all apps and settings migrated, then no, you will need to install all applications again, however you can migrate your user setttings/accounts and many files using Easy Transfer, I did this to test on a few of my laptops going from Vista to Win7 and using External HDD, worked fine.

To be honest, always clean install as its best option to remove any issues due to old OS legacy files.

If you do try to force upgrade Vista Home (or any version of XP) to 7 Pro (not sure that many home users need Pro), all 7 basically does is moves all your current Program Files, Documents and Settings and Windows folders into a new folder called Windows.old, you would still have access to your old data but would need to change permissions on many of them. Some old programs will still work if they have no dependencies in the old, now broken path.

Really though, backup and migrate, as Halo suggested, is the best way to go.

For the programs where you deleted the installers, you're going to have to go on the net and hunt down the installers/programs and do a fresh install. There's really no way around it.

Upgrading Windows will affect the following devices and/or programs:

These devices might not work properly after the upgrade. Before upgrading, we recommend updating the drivers for these devices. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel and search for "update device drivers", or go to the device manufacturer's website to search for updated drivers.

o Storage controllers: AQE3U9DJ IDE Controller

These programs might not work properly after the upgrade. We recommend uninstalling these programs before upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel, and search for "uninstall a program". (Note: Programs marked as * can be safely reinstalled after the upgrade.)

    o Adobe Encore
o iTunes (Please deauthorize computer prior to upgrade)
    o Logitech QuickCam
    o Logitech Quickcam 9.0.2

Not all drivers have been written yet for Vista 64 or '7'. No probs (Yet) with Vista Ult 32 (86), so do NOT go any further - yet. This is regard to any hardware.

BG is STILL using us as "Beta testers" (With more cost to "JOE public").

    Regs,

Further following digitalocksmith, you don't necessarily have to pay full retail, just go on newegg.com and get an OEM copy. You can only install it on one computer but it comes with a lower price and a lot less packaging.

In principal I agree. However, some machines are set up by manufacturers with only the OS they supply in mind. It is not always possible to upgrade supplied hardware. Unless you overwrite by upgrading utilising the highest form of OS disk you want to upgrade to.

Quite often, if you "Gash" a machine and format to the level of the new OS Master disk, some of the hardware will simply - "Not work". In addition, if you then load a driver disk that SHOULD have been originally supplied with any retail system, the new OS will quite often initiate a splash stating something like "Not compatible with this OS". Ingnore the splash and install the drivers anyway.

By "Upgrading" Microsoft have the best chance of supplying natural upgrades for your hardware (N.B. DO NOT download the latest 190.62 driver for NVIDIA as it doesn't seem to understand it's job without endlessly refreshing).

Inkeeping with BG's "Promise", the 'Microsoft' update site should give you the option of looking at and deciding on what updates you want. NEVER allow your OS to download automatically. Set your updates to inform you that there are updates available - YOU choose which ones are beneficial.

I have also paid the bucks for advanced master disks and still find that lesser disks do the same job with regard to "Rescuing" systems.

    Any arguements, PLEASE shout.

    Kind Regards,

    S.

I am running WIndows7 Ultimate, I had no driver issues as the drivers shipped with 7 are fairly new and one thing I did find that once installed when Windows 7 updated any drivers that were no new new drivers were updated.
Have to agree anytime you can so a clean install you are always better off, any hidden baddies, and any fragmented files are solved with a clean install. Windows7 installs very fast, and I had the chance to upgrade or new install and when all the dust settled of re-installing the apps etc. I ended up with a sleek very fast system.

    .

GOOD CALL. However we all have our own methods and theories. As a very old man with a very long history in computing (Since 1973, starting on "Supers"), I know that any system does not actually "Delete" any data history, it only "Renumbers" the data giving the impression that the old data does not exist. (On my test bench) I tried a clean install and gash and utilised 'Perfect Disk 10' to check and it deleted nearly 100 GB of old trash on one drive alone. Be careful, this process can take 24 hrs to defrag after the program's "Hunt". Again however, I can still retrieve most files that existed before the format.

My main server = 20 secs to "Log on" and 8 - 10 secs to complete shut-down. Any other machine in my home office (Net-worked) is about the same. This with OS upgrades and not full formats. It is never how quick a system boots up, the validity is within how long it takes to shut down.

No onetold me this. Have you ever studied hard drives in lab conditions? It used to be my job. I understand all things computing and can even read IFF/ SIF coding which gave rise to "Bar coding" used by retail outlets.

Further, I used to read and report on Machine code practice (Normally attempts at revision by those not "Auhorised"), whilst employed by NATO, NORAD and SEATO.

If you smash a hard drive with a large hammer, I can still regain some data using hardware that you would not understand.

I am beginnng to feel that some people that visit this site actually work for OS companies and do not fully understand that "Computers" are only "Dumb" tools that are only as good as the people that carry these "Tool boxes".

Next challenge please but - Only from a real "Techy".
