I've noticed Vista is accessing the drive alot, and after googling I figured out it was the indexing service. One question, though: Will it eventually stop or at least significantly slow down? If so, I'll just leave it on, if not I'll probably turn it off (mainly to prolong drive life, I'm on a budget).

I'm pretty sure once it does the initial search, it slows down...I haven't had any problems, and i've got hundreds of thousands of files on a few hard drives. I do keep my computer on all the time, so that might be one reason it doesn't seem to problematic for me.

    Hi

Yes it does slow down after the initial main indexing, then generally pops up to index when the PC is idle, check to see if in Add/Remove then View Installed Updates, if you have Windows Search 4.0 installed as this improves the original Search Indexer.

HDDs will generally outlast the rest of the PC these days, if it fails it was going to anyway due to a hardware build fault.

What also could be going on if new PC or new install of Vista, is the performance tweaks the system is going itself to move files around for best performance, like optimising the bootup etc, could also be another application, like Antivirus, Defragger etc

Try this Vista Gadget for monitoring the Indexer (Brandon who wrote this gadget is a MSFT tech) His Start++ app is a goodun too.
