My system is busy all of a sudden and I don't know how to monitor what program(s) is at work. I was writing a letter when the hd indicator light went on and has been on/busy for the last ten or so minutes. Okay, never mind, just got notice that AVG internet security was running a scan, on it's own.

Hi my friend , do you have a desktop or a laptop ? You could download this

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/winpatrol.html

going to Startup Programs inspecting what programs is installed in your machine , you have the choice to disable them , vista is an nightmare for many users

Along the lines of WinPatrol that falconattack suggested, you could also right click the Taskbar and select Task Manager and look in Processes.

On my vista machine I quit using avg around '13. The interface and resources got to be out of hand. I use just MSE and windows firewall along with off line scans by MalewareByte and SuperAnti Spyware and winpatrol to protect changes. Vista still works here fairly well.
