I have a network for the home. I've had several computers successfully networked and can print from the attached computer from any computer.

Router = Linksys WR54TG Wifi and hardwire.
Printer = HP 960C USB into computer 1.
Computer 1 - HP Pavilion with XP Home. Hard wired into the internet and router.
Computer 2 - EMachine M5414 with XP home. Connected wifi into the Linksys router.
Computer 3 - Alienware with XP Professional connected wifi.
Computer 4 - Toshiba with VISTA semi connected with Wifi.

I have the ability to share files and the printer between machines 1-3. All is happy. :D

Then computer 4 enters the scene. Computer 4 can connect, sort of, with the wifi. I have full access to the internet. I can share some of the files on computer 1, but not all. I can see the printer on Computer 1, but can't connect or print to it. I'm told I don't have the permissions.

Computer 4 can see and share all the files with Computer 2 and 3. Neither Computer 1, 2, or 3 can access files on computer 4. They can all see computer 4 in the work group but are denied permission for the connection.

I've tried turning off all firewalls and it doesn't change anything. I looked for all the numerous settings on XP and Vista. but can't see any differences between what I can share and what I can't.

I'm normally pretty good at diagnosis but I'm not familar enough with vista and haven't seen anything on listserves that helps. I've tried almost everthing I've seen.

    HELP!!!:cry

    Update:
Can now access all files on computers 1-3 with computer 4. However, I still can't see any files on computer 4 from computers 1-3. Also, I still can't get the printer to work.

Checked the IPs and they are okay and working. I've verfied that the sharing was enabled on the printer and on computer 4 (Vista).
    :cry

    UPdate 2:
Found that the Firewall in the McAfee on computer 4 didn't have the Netbois port enabled. Once I clicked this I was able to see the files on all computers!! Now to master the printer issue.

Feel free to provide any help ....

    May be this can Help.

Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is allowed to be shared.

Thank you for your response. I found those links on other forum hits. However, nothing worked for me. I eventually found a solution on the windows support forum for vista at

    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/community/default.mspx

I did a search for "WINDOWS CANNOT ACCESS THE PRINTER" After several attempts to try various solutions, I came across this one.

    1. Go to Add a Printer wizard
    2. Tell the wizard it is a local printer
    3. On the page that asks you to choose the port, select the create a port option and leave the choice as "local port"
    4. In the give the port a name box that appears, type in \\computername\printersharename putting in the appropriate names
    5. Finish the wizard in the normal way by selecting a printer from Windows' list or providing a disk with drivers.

Worked like a charm. I believe it has to do with the spool folder on the XP machine not being shared. With this, the vista machine uses it's own SPOOL folder and then sends it to the printer. At least that's my quess.

I've got the same issue. Vista can see the printer on the XP machine and when I double click it says access denied. The printer is set fro sharing and other XP machines print to it. When I click on add printer it says I am not authorized even though I am on an administrator account. I can see and open files, just can't get to the printer????

As you have a new thread of your own DaddySS as it keeps all relevant info to your issue together, opposed to piggybacking on another I will close this theread as the Original Poster has resolved their problem.

    Cheers.
