I have a Laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium OS which I have offered to a relative, as I mostly use my desktop PC.

Without going through the rigmarole of reformatting the hard-drive etc, is there a way of cleaning any traces of possible personal information left behind before handing it over?

I have transferred my photos to a USB memory stick and deleted all my personal files and folders. I have also ran CCleaner as a precaution, but I am not sure if that is all I need to do.

    Your advice is welcome. :dancer

The closest thing you could do is to create a new user account and delete the old one. This will delete everything personal about your user.

You need to understand the difference between deleting and wiping. Deleting only means that the filesystem will not accept the data as a file any longer. The data is still there, and still recoverable with the right tools. Wiping is where 1's and 0's is written over the data, so the data is not recoverable by commercially available tools.

The only way to be sure your data is not accessible any longer is to wipe the data. The only way I know to do this is to wipe over the entire hard drive, destroying all data (including the operating system). There may be a tool that wipes specific files the way you want to, but I find that especially unlikely since you have already deleted the files.

That may have come across complicated. Ask me further if something is not clear.

I think you've pretty much taken care of everything - you've moved your files and folders to a flash drive, you've run a cleaner or two in order to get rid of cookies and temp files and whatnot, I'd say that more-or-less covers it. A deep scan with a good malware remover isn't a bad idea though (MalwareBytes Anti-Malware is a perennial favorite here at MG).

As to wiping suggested above: there are several apps out there that will wipe the free space on the drive, this way you don't need to wipe the ENTIRE drive and then start over with a new Vista install. I know that nCleaner and Glary Utilities have features to securely wipe the free space beyond all forms of recovery. Keep in mind that this takes time so start it before going to bed at night. You should probably run a good defragger BEFORE using the free space wipe. I think CCleaner has an option to securely wipe everything it finds during its cleaning procedure, but it's very slow, and you've already run it, so either nCleaner or Glary are your best options at this point.
