Vista laptop cannot access and print to HP Photosmart 5510 wireless printer

Hi.

A friend of mine has a HP Photosmart 5510 wireless printer. About 6 month ago I setup his Vista laptop and his sisters Win7 laptop for printing. All was fine until last week. He went to print but the file just went to the print queue and there was a message with something like 'offline...'. He can access Internet and the Win7 laptop still prints fine.

I changed the printer IP from auto to manual (via the printer small screen) and changed the IP but no luck.

Can anyone suggest other solutions to remedy this? I wanted to reinstall the driver CD but I needed the Printer–PC USB cabled but it is mislaid.

 

My advice is to completely uninstall the printer software/drivers and download a fresh copy at hp.com. Usually, HP has two versions: a barebones driver set (preferred) or the full version that includes a ton of crapware.

Before attempting to reinstall the software, reset the printer to factory defaults using the menu commands on the printer.

It's been a long time since I set up an HP; however I think some models will let you do a setup/install of the drivers without the USB cable attached to the printer if you're setting up in wireless mode. If your model supports this, this is the preferred install method since it will (in theory) force the PC and printer to do a Wi-Fi connection instead of a USB one.
