vista, norton, and AVG...

i've done everything i can to get the norton anti-virus software that came with my laptop off.
i've downloaded and used the norton removal tool. i've gone through my programs and features. all norton and symantec stuff is gone.
AVG says there's still some antivirus stuff on my computer, and recommended that i remove it before installing the AVG free stuff.
could it just be vista?...i don't know, i'm not really a techy person, so if i'm not using the right lingo, i'm sorry...

 

I have just removed the Norton package that came with a friends laptop and I remember seeing a message that appeared at the end of uninstall.
Was it something about the registery change?
Have you gone ahead anyway with the AVG free installation?

I purchased a Dell 1330 earlier this year and had a similar problem. After using the laptop only one week, the Live update wouldn't download any new updates. I contacted Dell and had a technician remove Norton 2007 and install 2008 (the laptop came with 18 mos of free of Norton).

Supposedly, the 07 Norton was conflicting with Vista. Well, that fixed the problem...for a week. Then it happened again. I got so fed up with trying to uninstall and re-install Norton that I finally just reset the hard drive to factory settings and the first thing I did was uninstall Norton.

That was the only way to get rid of it. I promptly downloaded AVG and lived happily ever after!
