This dude has a Gateway laptop and the factory hard drive has unrepairable corrupt sectors. So I installed a new drive and loaded Vista and the drivers w/o any issues :D So now I'm trying to copy as much data as possible from the corrupt drive to the healthy drive. I have already copied all his docs, music, pics, etc. Now, he doesn't know what he sued for email. "I clicked 'email' and entered a password" is all he could tell me about email. :( I know the old drive had Office 2007, and he's running Vista. So what I need to know is: what are the default email and file locations for Outlook Express in Vista and in Outlook/Office 2007? I know that .dbx and .pst are extensions that were used in XP and older versions of Office, but I don't know if they're still the same with Vista and/or Office'07

    THANKS!!!

(I'm in a time crunch so if anyone knows, please post! In the meantime I'll look around the web too)

Windows Mail replaced OE in Vista - Windows Mail folder is located in C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsMail

Think Outlook 2007 would be in the same place, all my MS mail programs are there w/mail from all apps but i don't have Outlook on here, mail has a envelope icon and file name like: 2C6176D5-00000002 in my stored folders, hope that helps. Kind of strange some have a folder name of email address, some are in Windows Live, some are under a web mail account file, hopefully he only has one account he used. Hope this helps.

    Hi dlb

Mail in Vista is stored in its native email format and not in the older ways of a .dbx much easier storage method to backup and recover individual mail from IMO. as Cat mentions the icon to the individual emails have a code but to know the title of the email and who ist from just click it and it will show in the Details Pane.

Sample from my email folder of what I mean if anyone else is wondering same thing...

But back to the locations, Cat has given you the Windows Mail location, and to confirm the Outlook 2007 location is similar ( unless user defaultly changed its location ) in C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook and its still in a .pst format. To find its location if moved or still at default open Outlook and click Tools > Options > Mail Setup > E-Mail Accounts > then the Data Files tab and the file location of the Outlook .pst is shown in the main window.
