Vista on a Vaio; regedit.exe fails to respond

I am running Vista Home Pro.
I am attempting to fix what looks like the same, if not a very similar problem to the sound problem solved in this thread;

Where my 'Windows Audio Service' won't start, due to error 0x80070005: access is denied.

I got as far as downloading the modified registry file, and extracted it, but when I go to run it, nothing happens. No 'process' is initiated in Task Manager, or anything. So too if I try to run regedit manually.

I have been trying very hard to solve this problem, as I have the latest episode of Heroes sitting in my disk drive, and I cannot watch it due to having no sound. :cry

Any suggestions other than downloading an alternative registry editor?

If the 'System Restore' in-built windows function is what you're talking about I've tried that, but I don't seem to have any restore points dating from before the problem arose. It's been going on for a while now.

 

Ended up fixing the problem by backing up what I needed and doing the 'Vaio system restore' that is an option after one holds f8 during startup.

Sound and USB all work again, as well as Regedit.

It's a harsh solution but smething I at least know I can do again, though I'm pissed at all the drama I have to go through with Vista again.
