I recently (one week ago) bought a new laptop with following specifications

OS: Windows Vista Family Edition Premium
System Type: Operating system 32 bits
    System: Acer Aspire 5720 G

    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5450 @ 1.66GHz 1.67GHz
    (1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache)
    Upto 1024MB ATI Mobility
    Radeon HD 2300 HyperMemory
    2GB DDR2
15.4" WXGA Acer CrystalBrite LCD (8m/220-nit)
    160GB HDD
    DVD-Super Multi DL
    802.11a/b/g WLAN

it is supplied with norton antivirus (90 days trial) which i m using ::: the other softwares installed by me are

    a-squared free
    CCleaner
    Comodo BOClean Anti-Malware
    Comodo Firewall Pro
    Diskeeper 2008
    SpyBot - Search & Destroy
    SpywareBlaster

I have installed also all the updates available for windows vista and the softwares mentioned above

Now the problem is ::: the computer starts working very well but after some time, the right cliick of the mouse stops working ::: thats mean i can slect an object on the desktop and also i can open and minimise the windows (concerrning a program or internet explorer) but i cannot open new program or internet explorer windows :::: nothing works ::: i can open just 3 sites maximum at this moment and to launch another program or to launch another site, i have to close already opened sites or programs ::::

can someone help me in this regard :::: (i m connected with wifi and the speed is very well)

Can't imagine why you need all that anti ware, I'm not suprised the poor beast is staggering from exhaustion.

Do a system restore or better uninstall some stuff.

As far as I know the Norton which comes free with these Vista Acers is more than antivirus.
So far I have seen three of these, two from UK and one from Holland. For each I have removed Norton, once the subscription has run out, and put Avast on. This along with Windows Defender has proved very successful.

The version of Windows Defender that Microsoft released for XP is not so good as the one for Vista.

sorry but i didnot understand clearly ::: what should i do now to resolve the problem ::: should i remove norton or wait until 90 days (which i was thinking that i will replace norton with avast after 90 days) ::: if i should wait then what to do to resolve problem :::
i have activated windows defender and i run complet analysis and it found every thing normal::::

If you just do a system restore (its better in Vista) to before you added the extra antiware and see if the problem disappears.
You can alway undo (restore forwards) if this does not help and there is a genuine problem with the laptop.

I am hoping Chas will comment on the Sticky.

Hi Studio, totally agree with your restore comment, to before all this was installed, I have a similar ACER and it works perfectly quick in Vista ( once I removed all the junk ACER add to it ), but I did as yo udo remove Norton which is the NIS version so does as you know have Firewall, AV, Antispyware and will with the others also as you mentioned cause Vista to think its going through treacle.

I use Windows OneCare on that PC at present due to testing a beta of it, but if I wasnt it would have you choice and mine of Avast, Spywareblaster, Defender ( built in ) and A-Squared as a backup scanner only.

As for Chas's comments you may need ot PM him and direct him to this thread as you know he's a busy chap in Malware.

Are you using Windows Vista Starter? When using this version of Vista, you are limited to having only 3 applications opened at one time.

    Hope this helps.

well::: thanks to all for replying so quickly ::: well :: i m using windows vista family edition premium :::: i restored my system towards basic acer configuration at the time of buying ::: i have now some questions about this :::

norton is still there ::: i didnt start the 90 days trial this time but its there ::: also i have had a lot of softwares before restoring ::: what about them ::: this means, are they removed automatically or i have to do something to remove them because in my opinion they had occupied a lot of space and if they are still there, they will use this space for nothing because they are not operatinal
    i hope i m clear:::
    thanks again

I hope you used the Vista System Restore, not the Acer recovery.

System Restore does not remove any files, all it does is change the registry so that Windows (Vista) does not know that the program is there. However all the files are still present and, as you say taking up space.
Hopefully, you can go back to after you had installed your application programs , but before you had installed the antiware.

You can restore several times if you wish, till you find the right spot.

Let us know if you need help with this.

I assume we are discussing what was stated in message # 1 after ablaze installed the below?
If that is the case, here are my comments and suggestions.

A 1.67 Ghz processor and 2 GB of RAM initial seems great but running Vista requires a lot of horsepower and as you add more and more to it you are going to find out that a 1.67 Ghz PC is not very fast. Add to this that Norton was installed and it is a massive resource hog. I did not see mentioned exactly what type of Norton product. If this is a full security suite then that is even more of a hog and then Comodo Firewall and certain other tools should not have been installed. So we need to know exactly what Norton/Symantec software was actually installed. You could have already had a firewall if you had Internet Security Suite from Norton. Thus multiple firewalls could be installed.

Next the sticky states that only one realtime antispyware blocking tool should be installed. Since you have Vista running which defaults to having Windows Defender installed and uninstallable (bad idea) you should not have installed Comodo BO clean since this violates the rule of only one realtime AS blocker.

    Addition per application comments:

    • a-squared free <-- would not use if Norton is installed and this is the least of the required protection items.
    • CCleaner <-- requires no system resources except when running. Thus not an issue.
    • Comodo BOClean Anti-Malware <-- already commented on
    • Comodo Firewall Pro <-- already commented on
    • Diskeeper 2008 <-- not part of the sticky.
    • SpyBot - Search & Destroy <-- requires no system resources (unless you install Teatimer ---- did you??) except when running. Thus not an issue.
    • SpywareBlaster <-- requires no system resources except when running. Thus not an issue.
Suggestion: Get answer to question of exactly what from Norton is installed and was Spybot's Teatimer enabled or disabled.

Looks like it is too late to get an answer on Spybot and everything else since SR was used.

Actually my approach would have been to check out exactly what was installed and running and to back things out to see the effect. I don't think using SR was necessary and now you have things installed that cannot be uninstalled because the registry has been reset.

Thanks for your replies::: well for restoring, i already backed up the basic restore settings with the help of Acer EMPowering Technology ::: and i think that this is Acer Recovery not Vista Recovery ::: (i m not sure) :: if it is so :: then it means that i lost all the softwares and other files ::: well if this is the case no matter ::: i would liike a perfect (or semi-perfect) computer and i will install the softwares later on ::: kindly tell me that if there rest some traces of older files and softwares, then how i can remove them ::: i dont want them ::: i want to renew each and everything :::
well:: its not only 1.67 GHz but its 2 times 1.67 GHz (intel core 2 duo) that is its almost 3 GHz :::
well:: how i can know what type of norton security system i have :: because i m not able to find any "about" link :::
when i installed the softwares, windows vista firewall was disactivated and i leave it disactivated ::: windows defender was not activated but i activated it later on ::: ccleaner was installed without toolbar as mentioned in the majorgeeks link :::: spybot search and destroy was installed without teatimer as mentioned ::: everything was installed as recommended by majorgeeks in the link which i mentioned already :::
well:: now at this moment ::: i have restored the system via Acer Empowering Technology and the restoration was based on the basic configuration (it means that everythiing is as it was when i bought it::: i suppose) ::: now windows vista firewall is disactivated and windows defender is disactivated also :::: i cancel 90 days Norton trial but its still there ::: i installed nothing else ::::
now what to do please ????

Folders for things you no longer require can be deleted but that will not do a comprehensive cleanup. The best cleanup would have been to uninstall. That was why I said I would not have used a System Restore. I'm not sure exactly what Acer Restore does but it is possible that it totally restored your harddisk partition back to the way it was shipped which means all traces of anything you installed could be gone.

I did not notice it was a dual core but I also don't believe your performance is quite like a 3Ghz PC. I have not been following the technology that much or the perfomance comparison charts, but I would expect the 1.67 GhZ dual core to be approx 40% more efficient than a non-dual core (but I could be wrong).

If Windows Firewall was deactivated when you used Norton it means you have some sort of Security Suite and it also means that what I said about not installing Comodo's Firewall was true. You would then have multiple firewalls installed and bucking heads and wasting resources.

Was not activated when??? And if you had activated it while also have Comodo BO Clean this is again a violation of what the How to protect thread specified.

I'm surprised that Windows Defender is not activated by default, but since I don't use Vista ( Halo can answer this) I don't know what they do during install. Perhaps they ask if you wish to activate it at some point during an installation.

That's good and you should use it again and make sure you Immunize.

So are you saying that you do not want to use Norton at all? Are you sure that no processes for Windows Defender are loading?

Also what other junk did Acer install that you may not need? AOL? Any other junk? Many systems come with pre-installed DVD?CD burning software that most people don't want because they have their own which is usually better.

    For the record

Windows System Restore is designed to allow you to return to your starting point (restore forward).

The UK Vista Acers I've seen come with Windows Defender enabled. The Dutch ones come with WD disabled. Maybe this is a European thing?

They all come with a free trial of Norton Internet Security, which includes Symantec firewall, (on) and with Windows firewall (off).

Security on one Acer with Defender on was so tight that Software Explorer would not even allow msconfig to run. Many programs, even Vista certified ones, would install but fail to complete if they required restart.

Acer's own software is unreliable and many have found it prevents operation, particularly for the wifi. If it works for you fine - keep it -otherwise boot it out.

well:: i dont have the choice:: i think so ::: so kindly tell me that how can i find the traces if there are and how i can remove them :::

well:: there are 2 processors ::: one processor of 1.66 GHz and second one is of 1.67 GHz as the system properties shows :::
    intel core 2 Duo CPU T5450 @ 1.66GHz 1.67GHz

well::: when i bought the laptop and then i installed each and every software which i mentioned in my first message ::: after installing comodo personal firewall, i wanted to disactivate windows own firewall and i came to know thatt it was already disactivated ::: at this time, i didno know that window defender was activated or not ::: when i posted the message about the problem, and it was said that windows defender works well with vista, i tried to launch window defender and it demanded me to activate it ::: and at that time, i activated it ::: but now everything is as before ::: that means that there is no software installed (but norton is there ) ::: windows vista own firewall is disabled now (i checked it) and also window defender is not activated ::::

well:: i want to know that what should i install now :: is norton is sufficient or not :: if yes then what else should be installed as mentioned in your "how to protect yourself from malware" section ::: and if norton is not sufficient then how can i remove this so that i will be able to install avast antivirus :::
As for as windows defender is concerned ::: when i try to launch windows defender, it tells me that windows defender is disactivated and it is not providing any protection against anything :::

well ::: i dont have any other software which i think will be good as compared to the softwares provided with Acer ::: that means that when i m in need, i use to read the reviews about the softwares on www.download.com site and on your site and then which i found is going best for others i install :::

i will try to tell you what is on the computer now and it will be very nice, if you can suggest me what to do ::::

As I stated in my previous message, what you did with the Acer Restore may have remove everything but I will be giving you something to run below so we can take a look.

Yes but they make common use of other components of your hardware and thus the overall effect is less than that of a 3.3 Ghz processsor.

Typically installing another firewall will automatically deactivate the Windows firewall. Thus after installing Comodo, you would already see the Windows firewall turned off.

Personally I don't like Norton and from what you posted, it is Norton Internet Security which is a resource hog as stated previously. My opinion would be to uninstall this and use Avast or AVG. But you must make sure that ALL of Norton is truly uninstalled first.

Can you give us the exact word for word message (I know you are translating). I would expect deactived not disactivated but the full message could be helpful. Also since I don't use Vista, I'm not sure exactly what to do to enable it. Most PCs I have seen in the USA already had it enabled by default. Halo or Studiot may be able to specify how to enable/activate Windows Defender.

Your English is a lot better than my French. ;)

Please try to run the steps in the below link and then attach the requested MGlogs.zip file. This will give us more incite into your PC and may indicate if anything is left around from the previous installs of programs from the How to protect yourself link. Note there are special steps to take to get this to run on Vista.

    Using MGtools

well :: after restoring, i checked in the configuration panel and the windows firewall is deactivated :::

well how i can completely uninstall norton :::

well it said that windows defender is deactivated
windows defender does not assure any protection against dangerous or potentially undesirable softwares and it doesnot send you any alert because it is deactivated.
To ensure the protection of your computer against dangerous or potentially undesirable softwares, you have to activate and open windows defender (the underlined text is a link to activate and open windows defender.

In French: Windows defender est désactivé.

Now i came to do a complete analysis by norton and i updated it also ::: after that i m now updating windows vista ::: well:: now i will try to do as mentioned in the link sent by you ::: and i will send you the logs :::

    Hi

On the Defender in Vista issue I found that it was disabled by Norton Internet Security by default as it can be with other multiple security apps, this also can mess up Windows Security Center at times.

I basically dumped Norton Internet Security within 30mins of booting the new laptop, and prefer having these as my security apps, you remove Norton by disabling it from its tray icon then uninstall by the Add/Remove menus, but also remember Live Update 3.2 (Symantec Corporation) & Live Update Notice (Symantec Corporation) if listed are also notron applications, once uninstalled run http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html and then goto Program files and delete any Symanted/Norton folders, then run CCleaner its Cleaner and Registry options ( run the Registry one a few times as it will find more after the first pass ).

*note: do have the alternate applications already downloaded ready to install after you fully uninstall Norton.

    Avast Home ( Free ) ~ Antivirus
Defender ~ Antispyware and a pretty good application to manage startups
Spywareblaster ~ to aid in blocking many bad sites
Vista Firewall ~ with safe surfing I fell I do not need any other firewall, but I recomend Comodo as its now Vista compatible

A-Squared or AVG Antispyware ( but without resident shield active )

*personally I do not now like AdAware for one major reason, it takes too much stock in cookies, highlights these as bad just to inflate its scanning score and scare the poor user into thinking they have malware, when cookies are not an issue*

The Security Center should be able to allow you to restart Defender but with Norton still installed it will not start as Norton blocks it.

Out of your list and MY ACER which is the Aspire 5630 with T5500 @ 1.66 with 2GB Ram and Nvidia Go7300 and works very well in Vista, I dumped the following, these are a guide and you do not need to follow.

Adobe Reader r7.0 remove and get Acrobat reader 8.1.1

Or better still get this one also as it allows creation of PDFs from any application, DoPDF a nice addition to Acrobat Reader, Acrobat Reader 8.1.1 in Vista is fairly quick and has nice features so I dont see the need to change this to another app.

Norton Internet Security remove for at least similar to what I mentioned earlier, but only 1 antivirus, 1 Firewall, 1 Live antispyware app.

Is your Microsoft Office 2007 a trial? if its not then your mainly duplicating applications in having MS Works installed which is a simplified version of Office, but has some PITA file formats. So unless your actively using MS Works its worth removing as you have a far superiour application in Office 2007.

ACER Games are all demos and are IMO a waste of space.

The only ones I kept of the below are in green

    Acer Crystal Eye Webcam
    Acer Empowering Technology
    Acer eAudio Management
    Acer eData Security Management
    Acer eLock Management
    Acer Empowering Technology
    Acer eNet Management
    Acer ePower Management
    Acer ePresentation Mangaement
    Acer eRecovery Management
    Acer eSettings Management
    Acer Game Zone
    Acer Game Zone Online
    Acer Grid Vista
    Acer Tour

Did keep also the Acer Mobility Center plugin as its handy for my work and the OHPs and the OrbitCam Application, BUT absolutly loathe their WiFi manager, much prefer Vista' sown, but if its working for you leave it be.

Yahoo ! Toolbar with popup blocker ~ Arrrgg Remove!!

Also the startups need a bit of tinkering with as their are way too many junk ones that serve no purpose or can be manually started as they have no real need to start at every boot, but to advise you on this I/We would need to see a list of whats starting up at boot, so to do this get yourself CCleaner Free and once installed click Tools > Startup

Then do a printscreen ( on your Acer its hold Fn key and hit PtrSc key ) then paste into MS Paint, maybe crop it a little to just show the relevent bits as in mine below then attach ( when posting go advanced > Manage Attachments > Browse and Upload )

    http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/6659/44900010jr0.jpg

From here we can assist you in whats needed or not and this will help speed up your PC experience.

We can take as much time as you like in this, so don't think its a rush and do ask questions on what I posted and why?

    chaslang, first post says
So you are running 32 bit version ablaze. ;)

I suspect that you will not be able to run MGTools.exe because when you tried, the computer said, your version of windows is not supported.

Can you open more than 3 windows now?

After re-storing and doing all the things as i mentioned in my previous message, now everything is ok with my windows vista that means that i m able to open as much windows as i want :::: so the problem is resolved :::
thanks a lot you guys :: your are really genius and so kind ::: thanks::

well:: in the system properties, it shows that my computer system type: operating system 32bit ::: so my computer has 32bit version :::: i think that MGTools.exe was not working due to some other reasons ::: at that time vista was showing problems also ::: now everything is ok ::: maybe this will work now ::: the question is that "do i need to launch mgtools.exe or not?"

well:: now there is another problem (not very irritating problem but a minor problem) which i would like to resolve :::: the Acer eNet Management shows me that there are 0 networks but when i click on this it shows all the wifi connections which are there ::: i connect through wifi and it works very well::: the connection to my wifi connection is also automatic but Acer eNet Management shows always that there is 0 Network connections ::: i think this is comodo firewall pro which is blocking this ::: have you any idea please how to resolve this problem ????
