Will the programs that run and work well with XP Pro do the same in the new Vista? Example Avast 4 home, Diskeeper Pro 9, Sygate, Spyware Doctor, Registery Mechanic etc.

In most cases, yes, they will run alright. But, there's never any guarantees.

For example, Sygate Personal Firewall is no longer supported, so there's a good chance that it won't run on Vista; the developers aren't going to bother making it compatible.

Your best bet is to look for updates to the programs you want, and make sure that they are tested on Vista.

Like Mada said, check out all your important programs and make sure they all work with vista before taking the plunge. Most programs that are still supported by the manufacture should work on Vista. I've been running a Beta version for a few months now, and any problems I had with programs already have a fix and an update in the works for the release.

If you are the one planning on upgrading, I hope you are considering buying a new computer as well. I just glanced over your sig, and given your current system specs, Vista will not run on your computer.

Thanks for your answer. Yes I am waiting for my new Dell to be delivered sometime before the end of the month. With the new computer I get an express upgrade to Vista. That's why I wanted to find out about a few things before I do the upgrade.

What you can use before jumping into Vista straight away is to run this Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor as it will highlight some potential areas to find update for, wether those are drivers or software updates, but if the PC from DELL is a Vista certified one hardware driver wise you should be fine.

2 days ago Diskeeper just privately released a Vista support version (found on "Diskeeper blog").
