Sadly yes it is that stupid, auto updates, will download and install the updates, if one of the updates needs a reboot then it will or should popup a box so that you can pospone the shutdown for how ever long you wish, but if your typing and this box pops up it is very easy for you to hit enter due to typing over looking at whats popping up, and as that update box has window priority then its just like you saying yes and it shuts your PC down, happened to me yesterday.


But you can adjust Windows Update to Download updates but not install, type Windows Update in the Start Search box and open Win Update > then click Change Settings and choose Download but let me choose wether to install > then OK.

 

Quick question as I'm reading some tech posts on a private MS newsgroup in reboots in Vista with updates,

Do you have Windows OneCare installed? Seems as part of its tune up routine it turns back on Autoupdates and allows the PC to reboot, guess that needs addressing if true.
