This is an extension of this thread. I thought I had the problem fixed that I mentioned in that thread (the storage device issues) but I was wrong. I did fix the DVD drive, but the SD/MMC slot only recognizes blank (or mostly blank) cards. I have tried basic Device Manager uninstall/re-install and that worked until they put in an SD card full of data, and then a message about "unknown media" pops up, or a message about "an I/O device or driver error". These people have entrusted all their passwords and login information to their cookies. They have no idea how to log in to ANYTHING (like MySpace, Facebook, email, etc) without their cookies. Basically, the cookies cannot be lost at all costs. So, how do I save the cookies and reload Vista Home Premium? Can I move all the cookies from wherever they are now on drive C: to a flash drive or CD, and then reload Vista, then move the cookies back to the PC? Yeah, I know.... using a completely different password and log in name for everything and then entrusting it all to cookies is one of the dumbest things I've heard of. But who am I to judge. It makes PC maintenance next to impossible; it makes an OS repair almost impossible; even some malware scanners might remove these cookies. So, I need help here folks. I'm not a real Vista expert, and if these cookies get lost, I'll be in the :crap real deep.
    Thanks.

Here's another twist on it.... on this particular PC, when you go to log in to Yahoo Email for example, and you click in the Account Name box, a little drop-down appears with 3 or 4 accounts, they'll select one and then the password automatically pops in. They cannot remember any of their passwords. They cannot set new passwords because they cannot remember the answers to the security questions. So- who's got a plan???

Go to Nirsoft and look over the password finders. See if anything allows you to get the password for logins at websites. <sigh> What is so hard about writing passwords down on an index card? If the hd crashes they won't be able to get in anywhere.
I helped people like this in the past but when they refused to learn and kept doing the same ridiculous things, I said "no more". Take your computer to the Geek Squad and let them fix it!

What if the person(s) who use that computer go through the procedure on various websites for resetting a password due to forgotten password? That could at least be a solution for the password issue.

    IE or Firefox?

If IE, I dunno. If it's firefox. just back up the profile then restore it after you re-install. This is the easiest way: http://majorgeeks.com/Mozbackup_d5822.html

Another Idea. If they don't use/have firefox. Why not install it and then "import" everything from IE then back up the profile?
