vista search

Does anyone else find the search feature in Vista completely unusable?

How do you actually find files with it?

I changed my indexed locations to include the whole hard drive and now it won't find anything at all!

 

I find all desktop search completely unusable, because they all assume I don't know anything about my computer and I need every possible thing indexed, cross indexed, processed, queried, and rehashed. God forbid there be some scrap of metadata that's not replicated six different ways in the internal SQL database.

All I want to be able to search against are:
File name
Extension
Path
Creation date/time
Modification date/time
Size

I don't care about what the file is. I know that .doc is a Word document. I don't need to search *inside* them. I don't want to index the contents of my email or web browsing history or bookmarks.

I JUST WANT A SEARCH THAT'S FASTER THAN SEARCHING EVERY INDIVIDUAL DIRECTORY'S FILE TABLE. IT SHOULD NOT TAKE 20 MINUTES TO EXECUTE "SELECT filename FROM drive_c WHERE extension = 'mp3'".

46KB in zize (yes 46KB) in zipped form. Not available from Major Geeks unfortunately. :cry It is really fast for searches, instantaneous really. :major Although it doesn't say Suitable for Vista, I use it on XP Pro SP3 and Vista SP1 with no problems for me. Major disadvantage is that you have to Index files manually (known as Refresh) but that can be done at an idle PC time, by you. Once done, it is lightning fast in finding results.

4.5/5 for me. Only the manual indexing against it, IMO.

Windows Search works very well once upgraded to 4.0.
