I've performed the recommended VISTA tweaks as well as shut down everything in startup except Norton & ISP, and still everything is slower than my previous ME pos! e.g. Getting from major geeks home page to the forum takes a couple of minutes. All remedies gratefully appreciated!

Wow, obviously not good. Sounds more like an ISP issue rather than Vista, have you tried a different browser than IE7 or do a speed test? Is everything else working as it should?

so, what all do you have starting up? is your internet browsing experience the only thing that is slow? was it always like this, or did it just start? have you tried a different browser (as mentioned)? as you may/or may not know, norton is known as a resource hog to begin with, which version of norton do you have (ie - norton 360)? i know in the past when i had norton installed, when i went to the internet, norton had to load (draws blank - i think it was parental controls) before i could even get to the internet. you might want to temporarily disable your norton (for a test), and see if you can access this site quicker.

also, what is isp (i know it's internet service provider), but what do you mean you didn't disable it from startup? are you on broadband (ie - cable or dsl)? g/l - sos

    Hi

As mentioned earlier by sosaman, do for a test turn off Norton, its best to rule to this as the cause as well.

Also and it shouldnt really make much difference but can to some, turn of TCP/IP v6 to test also, to do this right click the network icon in system tray ( or Start > Right click Netoerk > Properties ) choose Network and Sharing Center > View Status next to LAN / Wan Connection > in Local Area Connection Settings choose Properties and uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 ( TCP / IP V6 ) and apply.

Reboot and try again with the internet.

Also as mentioned if its all sites your having issue with check your ISPs service.

Check if your Router/Modem has any firmware updates.

What other security programs do you have installed as well as Norton if any?

if it were me, and you follow halo's advice. i would do things 1 at a time, so that you actually know what fixes, it or not. then you just have to go back and enable that 1 item (if need be). - sos

you never answered me on this. what do you mean by this? is that your way of saying you didn't turn off your nic card (10/100 card), or whatever?

My question would be thus: Did the browser work fine before the tweaks?

Tweaks were done prior to downloading firefox.
Haven't done anything to nic card.
How do I open administrator command prompt. I've turned off UAC.

I think perhaps MarkTrent is a bit hard on you since you did post a list of tweaks (#6).

However it is rather difficult to follow what you are trying to do as your replies are very short and contain no explanation. Notice how much longer other Geeks replies are than your own.

In particular you say you followed recommended tweaks, but have not said who recommended them or why.

You also seem to have done a lot of things (possibly at once?) without returning the system back when they did not have the desired effect. So it is very difficult for anyone to unravel what is causing what.

    Your slowness is either

A problem at the ISP end, resolvable by noting whether you ever received a good connection.

A problem with the intermediate wiring between you and the ISP, resolvable by your ISP/Telco. The test here is that perhaps it has never worked properly.

A problem with your router. Once you have confirmed the ISP and line are OK, reset the router and try again preferably with another system.

A problem between the router and Vista. I have suggested a method of testing this.
In order to open a command prompt

    1)Log on as the administrator
2)click on the Windows button in the bottom left corner of the screen
type "CMD" into the search box above the button
    press enter
3)type your responses into the black box which opens.
You will note that the 'receive window auto tuning' is set to normal in my screenshot, as my router is capable of handling this function.

I attach a screenshot to help. This has been doctored to show both stages at once, so the box on the left shows stage 2 and the box on the right shows stage 3. You will not see them both onscreen at the same time.

Finally the problem could be with Vista itself, but we can go into that when you have cleared the more likely options.

Thank you Studiot. I can't access your thumbnails: Asked to sign in after I have already done so & then directed back to sign screen (closed loop).
The tweaks performed were recommended in: pcstats.com
The problem seems to have resolved itself.
Apologies for my brevity, but I thought I was providing sufficient info. I'll provide more verbose details in the future.
    Thank you all

When you sign in are you checking the "Remember me" box? If you don't, you won't stay logged in.

Perhaps your ISP had the weekend off?

    Glad it's better.

The mods should be sorting your access probs.
