vista sp1 error how to recover

Hello, My name is Marty.
Here is the situation, I am working on a laptop with Vista Home Premium. It work prior to the update of SP1. But while it was installing SP1 it got to the 2nd of 3 parts and then turned off. When i rebooted it after it not coming on for some time, it gets stuck. It looks like it is installing files then gets to a point in the registry and freezes.

Here is what I tried:
I used the recovery option from the vista disk and tried system restore. It hangs at finalizing installation. (also only 1 restore point is there even tho I know there were more just the day before)

I tried all safemode versions.

I tried last known good configuration.

I tried repair from recovery option on disc.

Then I thought If i used the cmd prompt I could access the add/remove prog from control panel and remove the update.

But here is a question:
How Do I see all the files from the command prompt with the recovery disc? I can get to my windows directory but there are only like 25 files listed. I was wondering if I there is a way to use the other files like control appwiz.cpl or something to get me running again?

Any suggestions would be great. Otherwise I will have to reinstall vista, but there is no disc and there is a vaio recovery option but it is on the hard drive which I cant access.
